Vibrantly offbeat and utterly original, Lucy Keating’s debut novel combines the unconventional romance of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with the sweetness and heart of Jenny Han.
For as long as Alice can remember, she has dreamed of Max. Together, they have traveled the world and fallen deliriously, hopelessly in love. Max is the boy of her dreams—and only her dreams. Because he doesn’t exist.
But when Alice walks into class on her first day at a new school, there he is. Real Max is nothing like Dream Max. He’s stubborn and complicated. And he has a whole life Alice isn’t a part of. Getting to know each other in reality isn’t as perfect as Alice always hoped.
Alarmingly, when their dreams start to bleed into their waking hours, the pair realize that they might have to put an end to a lifetime of dreaming about each other. But when you fall in love in your dreams, can reality ever be enough?

Why Did I Listen to Dreamology by Lucy Keating?

Dreamology by Lucy Keating has a super lovely cover. I mean, the use of pink is what really attracts my attention to this book. Then of course, the summary. There is the comparison to Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind which was a big movie when I was in college. That is something that absolutely appeals to me. Further, the whole dream thing makes me think of The Raven Cycle books so again, I am sold hook line and sinker. The fact that it is available via Hoopla on audiobook is just the cherry on top.

What’s The Story Here?

Lucy Keating’s debut young adult book follows this girl named Alice who has dreams about this guy named Max. She’s been dreaming about him for basically forever. They are IN LOVE y’all. However, it is limited to dreams. Imagine Alice’s surprise when she starts at a new school and Max is there, in real life. Outside her dreams. He is totally a different person in real life and not at all the guy she fell in love with. Also, he has a girlfriend. The dreams start making their way into real life and so, Alice and Max realize they have to put an end to seeing each other in dreams and well, this book deals with that whole process.

How Did I Like Dreamology?

Dreamology is a pretty okay read. I actually thought one interesting part of the book was the dynamic of Alice and her parents. Instead of her mom being the custodial parent, it is her dad. They are pretty close — or at least that’s what I remember. Her mom is on another continent conducting biological research with animals. She is barely involved with Alice or in her life. This is something that bothers Alice and when her mom comes stateside, this becomes an even bigger issue. I probably would have liked more of a focus on this. Otherwise, yeah, the book isn’t so bad. I would say not a ton of it is memorable, but, I legit have nothing bad to say about this.

How’s The Narration?

The audiobook of Dreamology is narrated by Erin Spencer. She’s got a youthful, feminine voice. It certainly matched my expectations based on the cover. The audiobook is relatively short at 7 Hours 48 Minutes, even shorter if like me, you listen at 1.5x speed. It’s easy to listen to and well narrated. I would recommend for a commute or a book you listen to while cleaning your home.
