The #1 New York Times bestseller and a USA Today bestseller!

Intrigue, riches, and romance abound in this thrilling sequel to the beloved, bestselling The Inheritance Games

The Inheritance Games ended with a bombshell, and now heiress Avery Grambs has to pick up the pieces and find the man who might hold the answers to all of her questions—including why Tobias Hawthorne left his entire fortune to Avery, a virtual stranger, rather than to his own daughters or grandsons.

Thanks to a DNA test, Avery knows that she’s not a Hawthorne by blood, but clues pile up hinting at a deeper connection to the family than she had ever imagined. As the mystery grows and the plot thickens, Grayson and Jameson, two of the enigmatic and magnetic Hawthorne grandsons, continue to pull Avery in different directions. And there are threats lurking around every corner, as adversaries emerge who will stop at nothing to see Avery out of the picture—by any means necessary.

With nonstop action, aspirational jet-setting, Knives Out-like family intrigue, swoonworthy romance, and billions of dollars hanging in the balance, The Hawthorne Legacy will thrill Jennifer Lynn Barnes fans and new readers alike.

Why Did I Listen To The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes?

Coincidentally, an audiobook review copy of The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes hit my inbox right around the same time that my hold for the hardcover came in at the library. Knowing that I had other obligation books to get to, but also that the list of people waiting for this book from the library was long caused me to go for listening to this book. It meant that I could get to it so much faster. I just had to know what happened next after thoroughly loving The Inheritance Games.

What’s The Story Here?

The Hawthorne Legacy is sequel to The Inheritance Games and picks up right where its predecessor leaves off. Avery Grambs is on a mission — which is to find Tobias Hawthorne. Turns out, the homeless man she used to play chess with may also actually be Toby. This means that the massive inheritance may not be Avery’s but actually should go to Toby. And so, Avery goes to find Toby and also get some answers about his connection to her and her mother. Meanwhile, Avery is in a lot of danger. That fortune doesn’t exactly put her in the safe zone. Together, she works with the Hawthorne brothers Grayson and Jameson to find Toby. Also, there’s a smidge of a love triangle, but so obvious who Avery goes for.

What Did I Think Of The Hawthorne Legacy?

Well, friends, besties, I think that The Hawthorne Legacy was very good and compelling. But honestly? I didn’t retain as much of it as I would have liked. I was in a rush to get through this book quickly while also dealing with a few big things at work. So, while I would normally be able to review data and do audits and listen to the audiobook — this time I half listened. Eventually I want to re-read The Hawthorne Legacy in physical form so that I can pick up on things that I overlooked and missed. I do think that it moves along at as good of a clip as the first book. The resolution was well done. And of course, Jennifer Lynn Barnes is just so completely talented that I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next (while also working my way through her backlist). I do recommend you read this book – but maybe while undistracted.

How’s The Narration?

The audiobook is narrated by Christie Moreau who is not a new to me narrator. She doesn’t disappoint in her narration. However, I never felt a strong pull or draw and was not entirely able to overcome distraction and all the things on my mind while listening. I think maybe if I tried again during an easier timeframe in my life I would have retained more. The audiobook is 10 hours and 23 minutes long — I listened to it sped up to 1.5x and again, liked it sped up, but did not retain as much as I wanted to or processed it as well as I normally would physically reading.
