"You'll fall deeply in love with this enchanting and cozy book, so much so that you’ll want to return to it every fall just to experience it again!"—New York Times bestselling author Breanne Randall
An enchantingly warm and funny novel about family, love lost and found, discovering who you are, and how difficult it is to slay a vampire from the beloved national bestselling author of the TikTok sensation In the Company of Witches.
Cassie Beckett’s life is anything but magical. With a wild younger sister, three unruly kids, and an absent husband, she’s really not looking forward to the witching month of October. At least the gorgeous, foggy Prince Edward Island is always quiet.
That is, until the vampires arrive.
As the creatures sink their teeth into Cassie’s tenuous grip on normalcy, she’s forced to come face-to-face with long–disregarded family secrets. The legacy gifts her with power, but also a lofty responsibility: rid the island of vampires, or let them win. (Both options suck, in more ways than one.)
Armed with her family, newfound friends, and a baby in a spectacularly garlicky onesie, Cassie must learn what it is to be a witch and how to fight for what she loves before time runs out. Because on Halloween night, the stakes will be higher than ever before...and it’s up to Cassie to finish what the witches that came generations before her started.
You know that feeling when it is Autumn and you just want to dive into a book with seasonal vibes? I had that feeling and thus dove right into The Late-Night Witches by Auralee Wallace. First it was the cover that caught my attention — it’s simply perfect! Then, I remembered that I had read and enjoyed the two Evenfall Witches B&B books (I hope more to come someday). Set on Prince Edward Island in October, this book is charming with a main character who really resonated with me.
The Late-Night Witches features Cassie who is a mother of three and apparently a witch. Something wicked this way comes to her little town. People are acting weird. As it turns out, there will be a battle for humanity between the witches and the vampires – in particular a vampire called The Deliverer. With the help of her sister Eliza and an estranged aunt – Dorcas – Cassie who had no idea she was a witch – will do whatever she can to save her family and her town, not to mention humanity. In the middle of all of this, Cassie’s marriage just might be over, afterall her husband is absent as he’s across the world serving in Doctors Without Borders. Cassie is doing her best to hold things down at home but along the way she’s lost herself. And so, she has to build her confidence in order to believe in herself enough to take on the Deliverer. Oh and did I mention there’s a cute new neighbor who has custody of his infant niece.
I absolutely enjoyed the majority of my time spent reading The Late-Night Witches. Auralee Wallace really excels with setting the spooky season vibes. You can just feel the world in which Octobers exist in the Prince Edward Island setting. The storyline really works for the season too — with the vampire supervillain the Deliverer in a fight against Cassie who is supposed to be the most amazing witch but just cannot seem to get magic to work for her. The stakes are high, if she loses so does humanity. I was hooked. I also really found myself rooting for Cassie because she is such an underdog. She is not your typical main character, she’s in her thirties with three kids, not a great job, and in a stale marriage. Cassie has always been a caregiver, from helping to raise her sister while they were in foster care, to now having three kids. But she doesn’t come across as resentful. I also liked the relationship she had with her daughter, where it’s kind of tense and confusing because her daughter is going through her teenage years, but at the end of the day they really love each other. Her twin boys add a bit of comic relief as well. The gravity of the vampire issue is broken up with some moments of humor, which made this such a good read to just sit down and relax with.
The Late-Night Witches has certainly earned a spot on my shelves. I am so glad that I pre-ordered it, as I enjoyed it immensely. This a book best enjoyed with a cozy blanket, a pumpkin candle and a good breeze going outside. It delivered exactly what I wanted – the vibes that would get me into an autumnal mindset.
