Angelfire Courtney Allison Moulton Book Review

I thought I would change up my review style a little bit for Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton as I am in a bit of a review writing funk. Instead of long, drawn out paragraphs which I love writing, I thought I’d list out some reasons why you should totally add Angelfire to your to be read stack now.

Mythology And Premise:

I'm So Excited Ducks Waddling gif

Ellie, the main character is Preliator which means she can wield this thing called angel fire to beat the crap out of these creatures called reapers who are these demons who eat souls and send people without a choice to Hell’s army. I loved the intricate mythology as well as the class structure of heaven and hell and those who fight. Seriously, every time a different sort of reaper showed up and Ellie whipped out her sword, I was like oh yeahhhh new mythology yeahhhh.

The Chosen One:

Sailor Moon Transformation Gif

Bro, I actually like ‘chosen one’ books. Ellie is just a 17 year old girl with nightmares until this mysterious guy awakens her inner bad ass and she begins to remember lifetime after lifetime in her role as reborn fighter of reapers or heaven’s warrior. I LOVE it when a character fulfills a prophecy and plays a larger role in the grand scheme of the universe.

The Slow Build:

I will concede that Ellie’s love interest, Will, is totally creepy at moments, but you guys! There is a nice and slow burn and AHHH a growing attraction between the two. I totally wanted to chuck some popcorn in their general direction and yell JUST FRENCH ALREADY JEEZ! Cuz I am totally one of those people who yells at movies and books in the privacy of my own home.

The Pace:

No lulls in Courtney Allison Moulton’s Angelfire. Sometimes when I read I think to myself, please stop expounding on your shirt and get on with the story. There is none of that crap here. Instead we are treated to car crashes, sexy nurses, battle scenes and tender moments. There are zero boring TO ME bits.

The Ending:

excited donna parks and rec gif

Get it girl. I just wanna tell Ellie to work it. I immediately wanted to dump my List of 12 and grab my copy of Wings Of The Wicked cuz damn you guys, Ellie comes on super fierce at the end and I LOVE THAT SO MUCH.

Disclosure: Received for review a very very long time ago, but hey I FINALLY READ IT!

  1. I forgot that there was a boy named Will in this book! I have a soft spot for book boys with that name so even when the book doesn’t work for me (like this didn’t), I can still think back fondly on this one aspect and remember his strong protector instincts.

  2. most entertaining review!!! I have yet to read this 😛

  3. I just love that you used a Kingsley giff.

  4. HURRAH Okay, you’ve convinced me to give it another go! Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood.

Also – “Cuz I am totally one of those people who yells at movies and books in the privacy of my own home.”

Me too. ALL THE WAY. The boyfriend is always like “you know you’re talking to something that can’t hear you, right?” BUT WHATEVER. I often find myself shaking books and yelling at them.

    • Oh man, my boyfriend always gives me that lecture too, and I am like what?! No no, they can hear me if I just yell hard enough or make a good enough argument.

  5. Heh. Loved the GIFs–they really enhanced your review in a fun way! Such a great urban fantasy. I’ve got the next one sitting on my shelf and really need to read it. Love the pace!

  6. Oh how I love gifs. At times, when used correctly, they can say so much more than words. This review definitely makes me want to add this to my TBR.

  7. Brilliant review! 🙂 I have read so many mixed reviews about this one but I think I should just see for myself what it’s like.

  8. Ugh, I was not impressed by Angelfire. I thought it was a total, badly done rip off of Buffy.

However, your review amuses me quite a bit. 🙂 PARKS AND REC!

  9. Donna looking happy gets me every time!

I’ve never read anything by this author but your review caught my eye. Ducks! Donna! I’m there.

  10. Please, please, PLEASE do more reviews like this! I mean, the book sounds fantastic without the gifs, but with them? My love for this review is astounding! 🙂

  11. I am at work cracking up at all these GIFs. lol

I have this on my to read list, but I generally push all angel-ish books to the bottom. Those Holy creatures creep me the hell out.

Except for Akiva in DOSAB. I would have hopped on that shit.

Yay slow burn, and now I want popcorn. Damn you!

    • LOL I exist to make work better.

      Popcorn is the best.
AND SLOW BURNS ARE MY FAVORITEEEE. I think you’d really like Angelfire knowing what I know about your taste from your blog.

Also Akiva. Be still my heart.

  12. I also loved Angelfire I have Wings of the Wicked sitting on my shelf right now can’t wait to dive into it. Great review very entertaining!

  13. I saw you tweeting about how much you liked this book, which made me finally start reading my copy. You’re right! I’m 100 pages in and am enjoying it so far–even the slightly creepy Will moments 😉 Haha

  14. I’m buying this book right now on your gifs alone. Great review.

  15. OMGosh this review is so much fun 🙂 I haven’t picked this one up yet, but it’s definitely been under my radar for awhile now, so I’m glad to hear you loved it!

Also I’m the same way– I’ll get an ARC, be all excited, then like 7 months later I look on my book shelf and am just like CRAP! It came out 2 weeks ago! Haha I’m definitely working on that 😛

Yesterday I wrote a GIF-filled review for The Selection by Kiera Cass– it wasn’t exactly a love, but it was fun to write anyways! 😉

Thanks for the awesome review! PS- Sailor Moon is my hero LOL

    • Oh my goodness, I swear that’s the story of my life, a ton come in my mail and I don’t get to them immediately. But yes, gif reviews are SOOOO much fun.

AND I LOVE SAILOR MOON! AHH!

  16. I ADORE this review!! Its all of my feelings in pictures 🙂

  17. Haven’t read Coutney’s books yet, but I got to see her at a signing. She’s one awesome lady. And speaking of awesome… *stands up to provide a standing ovation* … loved this review. GIFs make me unbelievably happy. 🙂

  18. how much do I adore this review? SO MUCH. Angelfire was one of my favorite reads in 2010 and I loved loved loved Wings of the Wicked so much! <3

  19. Haha, this was an awesome way to get you out of your funk. Worked for me! If I hadn’t already had Angelfire in my TBR, this would probably do it. This series is getting relegated to the wait till it’s complete pile for me though. I’m hesitant about the Chosen One thing, as I tend not to like chosen one books, but with good pacing and a slow burn romance, it just might work.

    • I think I am a weirdo in my love of Chosen One books, it seems like a lot of bloggers don’t care for them.

That’s a good plan, waiting until it’s completed. I feel like I should have done that with several series! 😀

  20. Okay…now I want to read it very badly !

  21. What a nice change to the usual format 🙂

I’m sorry to say that I did not feel the same way about Angelfire at all. The best part for me was the pretty cover :/ I struggled to finish the book and Will almost had me tearing out my own hair with 99 % of his answers to Ellie in the line of “you’ll remember it in time”….

  22. LOL love your unique review! Those graphics are perfect. If you LOVED this one, wait till you read the sequel. Holy crap that book is awesome! I’m so glad you enjoyed this book.

  23. I bought this one for my kindle not too long ago but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Your review has made me want to push it up to the top of the list. Loooooved this fun review style April! 🙂
