I’m the daughter of murdered parents. I’m the friend of a dead girl. I’m the lover of my enemy. And I will have my revenge.  In the wake of the devastating destruction of the luxury yacht Persephone, just three souls remain to tell its story—and two of them are lying. Only Frances Mace knows the terrifying truth, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge the murders of everyone she held dear. Even if it means taking down the boy she loves and possibly losing herself in the process.  Sharp and incisive, Daughter of Deep Silence by bestselling author Carrie Ryan is a deliciously smart revenge thriller that examines perceptions of identity, love, and the lengths to which one girl is willing to go when she thinks she has nothing to lose.
Why Did I Listen To This Book?
After skimming Steph at Cuddlebuggery’s review of Daughter Of Deep Silence on Goodreads, I knew that I just had to read Carrie Ryan’s latest book. For serious, a strong review from someone with great taste in books goes a long way for me. I am also a fan of Carrie Ryan’s Forest of Hands And Teeth series and so, I wanted to see how she does when she’s not writing about zombies. Suffice to say, I am so impressed with what I read. I went for the audiobook version because there are just not enough hours in the day for all I want to read and audio is one of my favorite ways to squeeze in more reading hours in the day.
What’s The Story Here?
Frances Mace was aboard the cruise ship the Persephone when tragedy struck and all aboard the Persephone were murdered by gunmen. All except for Frances, her cruise best friend Libby, the Senator Wells and his son, Grey. Unfortunately Libby dies while adrift at sea, just before Frances is rescued. After rescue, while in the hospital, Frances tries to tell people what happened. She then sees the Senator and Grey on TV, proclaimed the sole survivors of the Persephone, where they claim the ship went down due to a wave. It is also discovered that the coast guard stopped looking for survivors because allegedly the Senator called off the search. This enrages Frances because Libby may have survived if they didn’t stop the search. And so, with no family left, she finds herself taken under the wing of Libby’s father and assuming Libby’s identity.
It helps that her father, Libby’s father that is, is obscenely rich. Therefore “Libby†is sent to boarding school in Switzerland after receiving some minor cosmetic surgeries to look like the original Libby. Four years after the tragedy of the Persephone, Cecil, Libby’s dad dies and so, Frances as Libby returns to the United States, to Libby’s life, to exact her revenge upon Senator Wells and Grey. What Frances does not contend with is Libby’s adopted brother, Shepherd, who has loved Libby since they were little kids, as well as the return of her feelings for Grey.
What Did I Think Of Frances?
If you are into characters that are compelling, complex, and utilized to full potential, Carrie Ryan’s Daughter Of Deep Silence is on point. Frances is not your average high school graduate. She is methodical and calculating. Granted, she has great reason for this. She is grimly determined. Frances might as well be the Edmund Dantes of young adult literature. I mean this in the greatest way possible. Her character arc is well formulated as we get her flashbacks from aboard the Persephone and her life now. We see her grow and change and develop. I loved how dynamic Frances is. Then there’s how she sort of absorbs Libby’s personality and struggles between being Frances and being Libby. There’s a lot to unpack while reading Daughter of Deep Silence. If you want a book that will make you think, you’ll love this book.
How’s The Revenge Plot?
The revenge subplot of Daughter Of Deep Silence gives The Count Of Monte Cristo a run for its money. Ryan does a meticulous job writing out Frances’s revenge. It is very detailed and well thought out. I am actually impressed with Frances and how she endeavors to wreck vengeance on her wrongdoers. She keeps these notebooks with information and observations to maintain the facade that she is Libby as well as to use against the senator. Alas, the revenge takes a twist when Frances finds herself falling for the enemy – for Grey – all over again.
How’s The Narration?
Karissa Vacker is THE BEST. I have never listened to her narration before and omg you guys it is the year of discovering new narrators who are solid readers. I loved listening to Daughter Of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan. I think that Vacker infused the narration with emotion and action and it makes all the difference. She read the book as someone who really gets the story. This is totally worth a listen, y’all.

I definitely want to read this!!! I haven’t read that many YA revenge stories that I’ve loved, so I’m always on the lookout for a good one 🙂
I have been dying to read this too April. And I am so in the mood for a good revenge story line. I think I will be buying this one. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one.
Great Review!

I’m so excited to read Daughter of Deep Silence! I loved Ryan’s Forest of Hands and Teeth series so dang much, and when I heard she was releasing something new and different, I added it to my TBR stat. Can’t wait to see how she manages the revenge plot, and to see this story play out for myself!
I have an ARC for this, but I still haven’t read it because I’m a horrible manager of time. BUT I’m glad you liked it, because this is a great review. It’s on my summer reading schedule, so I’ll definitely be getting to it eventually.
PS – I LOVE the That 70s Show gif! So great.
I am really going to have to get onto reading this book. 🙂
