Recapture the Victorian mystery and magic of Lady Julia Gray with book 4 in Deanna Raybourn's fan-favorite series After eight idyllic months in the Mediterranean, Lady Julia Grey and her detective husband are ready to put their investigative talents to work once more. At the urging of Julia's eccentric family, they hurry to India to aid an old friend, the newly widowed Jane Cavendish. Living on the Cavendish tea plantation with the remnants of her husband's family, Jane is consumed with the impending birth of her child—and with discovering the truth about her husband's death. Was he murdered for his estate? And if he was, could Jane and her unborn child be next?Amid the lush foothills of the Himalayas, dark deeds are buried and malicious thoughts flourish. The Brisbanes uncover secrets and scandal, illicit affairs and twisted legacies. In this remote and exotic place, exploration is perilous and discovery, deadly. The danger is palpable and, if they are not careful, Julia and Nicholas will not live to celebrate their first anniversary.

Dark Road To Darjeeling by Deanna Raybourn picks up several months after Silent On The Moor. Lady Julia Grey and Nicolas Brisbane are now married. The couple is honeymooning in the Mediterranean when they receive word from Jane Cavendish, who was Julia’s sister Portia’s former lover, in India. Jane is recently widowed and suspects foul play. Of course, Brisbane and Julia are on the case.

I think that the Lady Julia Grey series by Deanna Raybourn is very comfy. These books are like slipping on a familiar pair of slippers. I go into these books knowing there will be a mystery. Also, I know that Julia and Brisbane will solve the mystery. I know there will be tension between the couple. Yet, I don’t know the overall trajectory. I read these books for the journey rather than the destination.

While I love that Julia and Brisabane are married, I miss the will they/won’t they sexual tension. I mean, the characters still have chemistry, but I’m no longer wondering if there’s more to a simple gesture because they are now married, so obvi Brisbane likes, nay, LOVES Julia.

Yet, it’s not total marital bliss for the new couple in Dark Road To Darjeeling. Brisbane is all worried about Julia and does not want her solving mysteries because of the danger. Of course, Julia, consistent to her character, will have none of that and maintains her independence. I love this. I love when characters stay in character and don’t do bizarre deus ex machina type things, but the natural thing.

As a fan of Deanna Raybourn’s previous books in the series, Dark Road To Darjeeling met my expectations without feeling cheesy or trite. I definitely got what I came for and cannot wait to embark on a new adventure with Julia and Brisbane in This Dark Enquiry.

Comments

  1. I don’t, all that much, want to read this one, but boy am I in love with the cover!

  2. I get sad when the will they/won’t they tension is over too when a couple gets together. But, a strong author always finds ways to keep things interesting. Sounds like an intriguing series.
