Why Did I Read Witch Hat Atelier Volume 1?

Honestly, I picked Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama up because it was part of the whole Camp Netgalley promotion and I felt suckered into wanting the badge. Truthfully, I love manga and this had been on my radar (the same company publishes my gateway – Sailor Moon) and this seemed like just the kick in the pants I needed to finally start reading this lovely story.

What’s The Story Here?

Witch Hat Atelier Volume 1 tells the story of Coco, a young girl with a dream. You see, Coco has always wanted to be a witch and to learn magic. However, she’s under the impression, just like everyone else that witches are born not made. She learns differently when a witch comes to her town and she sees the witch drawing their magic. It is then Coco learns you just need the right writing instrument, ink, and symbols. Coco finds this book from her childhood and begins doing magic. It has disastrous impact. So, she’s gone to study with the witch who came to visit in the hopes of learning magic and undoing her mistake. She goes to live at the Atelier shaped like a witch hat.

How Did I Like Witch Hat Atelier Volume 1?

I found Witch Hat Atelier volume 1 to be a lovely story. There’s something about people going for their dreams and taking those beginning steps that just sucks me right in. Coco is truly a lovely girl who works hard and whom I am rooting for. Yes, she makes that big mistake that impacts her mom. However, she’s doing what she can to fix it. I will certainly be reading further in this series. Hopefully my library has the rest of the books. Oh, I do want to say there is NO romance in book one. It’s very much a story of a young girl who aspires to more. I’d be curious if there will eventually be more romance, but at this point, I’d love to see more of Coco, her learning, and how she connects with the other witch students.

How’s The Art?

The style of Witch Hat Atelier is sweet. I found the art to be eye catching and to remind me a little bit of Studio Ghibli. It just has a cozy feel to it. The story and pictures are easy to follow. I found myself reading this in essentially two sittings. Overall, I would recommend this story to people who want a cozy story with a bit of magic.
