Hello reader friends! How are you all doing today? Myself, I am still in the trenches of reading Renegades which is Marissa Meyer’s latest book. As it turns out, that book is WAY longer than it looks. It is excellent so far though – except for the very beginning first chapter but I am just a little tiny bit sensitive to babies right now! Anyways, given that I am on page 201 out of 480 pages, I thought it best that I not write a review today. Instead, we’re taking a look at five of my favorite super heroes and then you can read on to find out a little more about Renegades.
Top Five Superheroes According To Books & Wine:
-
Wonder Woman
Okay, so normally I am just not big on Superhero-type movies as they seem to be about men and damsels in distress and that’s so boring to me. I goddamn loved Wonder Woman. No joke, we preordered it as soon as we walked out of the theater. Also, the theater was packed for a matinee a few weeks after the movie came out. I think that Diana’s commitment to justice and how hard she works to one day fight for good is so admirable.
-
The Sailor Scouts
I am pretty sure that Sailor Moon and her scouts had better count as superheroes. So, back when I was a youth, I would get up at like the crack of dawn to watch Sailor Moon on Fox Kids. This show was basically my favorite FOR YEARS. It was really the first time I saw girls in popular media getting to be the heroes. Like, these were the days when basically every other show on TV catered to boys but this one did not. Sailor Moon will ALWAYS have a place in my heart as one of my favorite heroes. I have a soft spot for all the others too.
-
Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan is so awesome. She’s a teenage Pakastani-American girl who is just discovering that she has powers. Yet, she still lives with her parents and still has to follow their rules. Plus she’s Muslim. I just love her character. This is one comic book that I would love to see come to the big screen.
-
Eleven
Listen, if you can take on the demigorgon, you count as a superhero. I am so jazzed for the second season of Stranger Things. I can’t wait for more Eleven. Seriously, this character is great. She loves Eggo Waffles. She is pretty loyal to her group of friends. And well, I think that she really truly kicks ass for a kid. -
 Elastigirl
Finally, I have Elastigirl. Now that I am a mother, I appreciate this family member of The Incredibles aka the Parr family even more. I love all that she does for her kids. I think of that scene where she’s like an airplane and then something goes wrong so she encourages her one kid, Violet to go invisible, but it doesn’t work. So, she turns herself into a parachute to protect her children. That just resonates so deeply with me and well, I think I watch The Incredibles a little bit differently now.
So, now you probably want to know more about The Renegades by Marissa Meyer?
Well, it comes out November 7, 2017 from Feiwel And Friends imprint at Macmillan.
Here’s the summary:

I’m currently reading Marissa Meyer’s Heartless! It’s pretty good so far (I downloaded the audiobook from my library–the person reading it is amazing! She does a different voice for everyone.).
I’ve been reading a lot of Marvel comics lately, and Kamala Khan is one of my favorite characters. She’s unique, yet modern.
I recently watched The Incredibles with my son, which is the first time I’ve seen it as a mom, and I can agree that Elastigirl resonated with me in a way she didn’t before. Her marriage, too.
Loved this!
Great list! I love Sailor Moon too – it was one of the very rare series about girl heroes I encountered as a kid. I was really impressed to find in the comic a girl who works hard to pursue something instead of just waiting for the prince to come save her. Her hair style was so inspiring too hahaha – I spent hours trying to heart shape my bangs!
