In this first book of a captivating new series by bestselling author Susane Colasanti, three girls share a Manhattan apartment the summer before college begins. City Love captures the essence of summer love, self-discovery, and sisterhood, a perfect fit for fans of Sarah Dessen, Jenny Han, and Jennifer E. Smith.

This summer will change everything for Sadie, Darcy, and Rosanna. Sadie is all about dreaming big and following her heart, hoping her soul mate is right around the corner. Darcy wants a summer of boy adventures with New York City as her playground. Rosanna is running from dark secrets of her past, desperate to reinvent herself. With no parents, no rules, and an entire city to explore, these three girls are on the verge of the best summer of their lives.

Told from alternating points of view, City Love resonates with the moments when everything is thrilling, amazing, and terrifying all at once . . . in a way it will never be again.

Why Did I Listen To City Love by Susane Colasanti?

City Love by Susane Colasanti is the start of a cute, contemporary trilogy set in New York City about three college bound girls on the cusp of love. Of course, the bright pink cover that is literally shiny had something to do with why I wanted to read this book. Then there’s the setting which is one of my favorites. I love books set in New York City. Also? I felt like this would be a fun listen as it features three decent narrators. As always, I made the commitment using one of my Hoopla borrows and really went for this book.

What’s The Story Here?

Okay so City Love follows three girls who live in an apartment together for the summer. They are Darcy, Rosanna, and Sadie. Sadie actually grew up in New York City but she’s in the apartment because she wants to just get out of her home and be independent. She feels stifled. Rosanna is originally from Chicago and poor. She wants to be a social worker, so unless she goes onto get her MSW, she’ll just squeak by. Rosanna also was my favorite for reasons. Then there’s Darcy who is wealthy and who is from Southern California. Darcy spent a while backpacking through Europe. Each girl will have romantic adventures beginning with this book and continuing throughout the trilogy. So hands down, I am here for this. That really is the gist of this story though – how the girls bond with each other but also how they find love, sort of.

How Did I Like City Love?

I actually really enjoyed City Love. However, I enjoy Susane Colasanti’s books on the whole. They’re sweet contemporary that reminds me a bit of Sarah Dessen. I think if those are your jam, Colasanti is going to be right up your alley. I ended up warming up to each main character. At first I thought I would be kind of bored by Darcy’s parts because who cares about rich people? However, I did end up caring about her character. Also, the romantic entanglements are captivating – one goes very well, one will have you going WHAT and the other is sort of up in the air.

How’s The Narration?

The audiobook is narrated by three narrators – one for each girl. Of course because I have mom brain, I cannot tell you which narrator does which character, but you know, each is good and distinctive. The three women who narrate are Cassandra Campbell, Andi Arndt and Tavia Gilbert. All three are readers that I am familiar with. I liked that Rosanna, Sadie, and Darcy each had their own narrator – for their chapters. It made the audiobook a stronger listen. Plus the audiobook is a relatively fast listen as well.
