Holla if you like Judd Apatow movies. If you have a crass sense of humor and laughed hysterically at Superbad, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman, you will absolutely not want to miss Swim The Fly by Don Calame. Seriously, where has this book been all my crass, dirty-minded life?
Every summer Matt, Coop and Sean set a singular goal to accomplish. This year’s goal? See a real live nude girl. Friends, I am kind of laughing as I write this, just remembering what happens in Swim The Fly. Anyways, all three guys are on the swim team and are the very worst swimmers on the team. Kelly, the new girl on the team has caught Matt’s eye. Unfortunately she is dating this meat head named Tony and Matt is super skinny — fast metabolism and all. Part of Matt’s plan to impress Kelly is volunteering to swim the fly which definitely requires a TON of upper body strength.
Okay, you guys, I LOVE it when the books I read have humor that is not contrived. I literally laughed every other page and when I finished, I hopped on Google Chat to tell a friend that I am sending this to her, it is SO GOOD. Like, the character Coop reminds me of Seth — Jonah Hill’s character on Superbad. I LOVE IT. And Matt! He is totally Michael Cera – in that he is awkward and earnest and awesome. And Sean is just the side kick. Seriously, I loved all of these characters, they just come across as real people who do totally stupid shit, much like my friends and I.
I legitimately don’t know what to say to make you read this book. If you are prude and easily offended by laxatives, swears, and hilarious old men – stay far, far away. On the other hand, if you LOVE to laugh, love swimming, true to live friendships and the various comedy movies I’ve mentioned do not let summer pass you by without getting your hands on Swim The Fly by Don Calame. It is ridiculous and glorious and definitely BEGS to be read and shared with all your dirty-minded friends. All I can say is swim caps off to Don Calame for a job well done and for providing me with some gut busting laughs.

This book sounds absolutely awesome!! I love the idea of a singular summer goal – and of course I can imagine all the hilarity that this specific one might ensue! I have such a crude sense of humor sometimes, that this one would be right up my alley!

Oh, Jac. I think you would laugh your head off at the entire book if it’s to your taste and what you said about your humor, I totally think it is.
You had me at humor. I’m so glad you are always finding these books with great male characters who are just naturally funny. You’ve already turned me onto some good reads, and I’m anxious to get to this. It’s amazing how refreshing male characters can be in some books, and how one dimensional in others. Great review!
I agree completely. When I read books with male main characters I want realism and humor and sometimes they read as stereotypes or like a total fantasy and seem just unreal. So yes, this one, Swim The Fly is the real deal.
So glad you liked this! The laxative/protein powder scene had be cracking up so bad. I loved it.
OMG I could not even handle that scene. Bahahahaha.
Of course, my personal favorite was anything to do with Arlo.
OR OMG when they go to the party with the O’Doules hahahaha.
I love humour, but not the crass kind of humour, unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed it though!
Awww, yeah, perhaps this is not the one for you.
YAY I’m so glad you loved this one. I’m my opinion not enough people know about this one. And OMG the ymca scene…so hilarious. Can’t wait to read the sequel, Beat The Band.
Also, thanks so much for linking to me! 🙂
YES! I wish that way more people would check these books out. I think i am actually going to do Beat The Band on audio because the narrator is one of my absolute favorites.
So crass humor + me = WIN. I’m totally checking this one out.
Hahaha, Amy I bet you will LOVE Swim The Fly then.
Haha, YES! Matt IS totally Michael Cera. That poor scene with him in the bathroom. Can’t wait to read Beat the Band so I can hang out with these characters again.
Fantastic review.
Oh man, yes the bathroom scene I was simultaneously grossed out and full of pity.
Word. I am PUMPED for Beat The Band.
