Hey amigos, I had a fantastic opportunity to ask Catherine Greenman, author of Hooked a question! Please give her your warmest welcome.
My question:
“Why did you chose crocheting as a subtopic for Hooked, because it did play such a huge role (and was awesome, BTW, I wanted to go out and pick up some yarn afterward despite not knowing anything about crocheting)?”
Catherine’s response:
While I was writing Hooked I was dipping in and out of crochet projects. I would start a project with tons of motivation and inspiration only to abandon it due to time constraints or from being too discouraged by not knowing how to fix a mistake I’d made. (Un-completed granny-square throw, I’m looking at you.) So Thea’s pursuit of crochet was sort of my idealized version of how someone gets into a hobby: They get really into it, they stick with it and get better and take on more complicated projects, then maybe they get a great idea, like crocheting a bikini, and the idea takes off into a business. A crocheted-bikini business is a bit of a fantasy, I realize, but businesses are built on fantasies!
Also, like many people do, I got into crocheting as a response to all the computer/phone related stuff I do, which, I found, was becoming soul-depleting. The drive to crochet, like the drive to write a book, are about the same thing: the deep desire to make something yourself!
Just like it is for me, crocheting was a release for Thea, it was calming, it was soothing, it let her take stock of the moment and it grounded her in reality. It was, therefore, a great story device in helping her turn her life around.
Fascinating, no? Anyways, you can read all about Hooked here. And check out her bio and website here. Also, if you leave your feed reader and come to my site, if you look in the left corner, you can see the trailer for Hooked in the multimedia box.
Okay, so the part you have ALL been waiting for!
I have one hardcover copy of Hooked thatΓΒ I can mail pretty much anywhere in the world. SO here is the deal: Leave a comment. You don’t need to put your email address in your comment, because I already get that when you fill out the boxes to leave your comment. Contest ends 11/09/11 at 6 p.m. EST.

I’m not sure if a crocheted bikini would work π But it sounds fun! And I think it’s cool that it’s a subplot to the book! I got into knitting at one point, but I never really got past knitting scarves. Cause they’re easy π And who doesn’t need a scarve or four?
Thanks for the giveaway!
Love this cover! I can identify with Catherine on getting discouraged when mistakes happen – I don’t have anyone to help me, so I have given up and moved onto beading . . . lol
I always get the urge to take up hobbies and never actually give them a go – perhaps Hooked would help inspire me. Probably wouldn’tinspire me to crochet though ‘cos if knitting and sewing are anything to go by I’m already sure I’ll suck. This is a great post, great question and a great giveaway!
sounds really interesting, I love the idea of having a crochet subplot, definitely an under-rated hobby!
I am a crochet junkie! So I love hearing more about this book and especially how the character got ‘into’ crochet!!
Thanks for the opportunity to win! This sounds like a pretty good book. π
I have wanted to read this one since I first saw it. Please count me in!
I taught myself to knit but I have no idea how to crochet! I appreciate the cleverness of the title having more than one meaning.
Hooked sounds like a easy fun read and I would love to give it a try.
Thanks for the giveaway and especially for opening it to worldwide entries.
Much appreciated.

Please enter me! Hooked has been on my TBR list for awhile!!
Crochet seems calming, but I tend to get bored with things like that. Reading is the only thing I love to do that requires you to stay still. I wish I could be still enough to try it.
Yay Giveaway! I also crochet & am interested in seeing how the author uses it in the novel. Curious!
I had such a fascination with crocheting when I was like 11 and 12 and I really wanted to learn but I lost interest really soon.
I’ve been hearing good things about this book. It’s been getting a lot of hype, so I would obviously love a chance to win it and read it.
Thanks April.

Thanks for the giveaway!
I tried to start crocheting in grad school, but the yarn kept slipping off π I had hoped it would be a relaxing way to decompress from writing papers, reading texts, etc. but, alas, it was not meant to be! lol
My mother tried to teach my to crochet, but I’m not sure I really picked it up, I think I prefer sewing and embroidery. I am intrigued to read this book.
I am dying to read this book! Thank you so much! I also love love crocheting π π I crochet all the time.
Thank you π

Thanks for the chance to win!
I once got into knitting in high school. I completed one bad scarf and about a third of a shawl before quitting. I still wear the scarf, though, and I have the unfinished shawl sitting on my dresser, with knitting needles and all, waiting for me to pick it back up again and finish it. It may happen. Most likely not. π
This sounds like a great opportunity, thanks!
Crocheting? Interesting. I’m not very good at stuff like that. Just look at the little scarf I attempted to knit. It’s completely crooked. XD
I love to crochet! This book sounds cute and the cover has me intrigued!
I’ve actually seen crochet bikinis and i like them a lot. I’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet but have never had the patience.

Hooked sounds like an interesting read. I’ve always wanted to learn crocheting!
This looks like a very interesting book. I’d definitely like to have it on one of my (many) bookshelves.
I want this so bad!
I would love to read this! Thanks for a chance to win.
I love the idea of crocheting being intertwined in the story line. I do not think I could wear a crocheted bikini. It would probably be a horribly mess if I tried to make it. π
I would love to read this one. Thanks for the great giveaway!
