Why Did I Read Ms. Marvel?

I decided I wanted to read Ms. Marvel Vol 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson art by Adrian Alphona because so many people were talking about it. In fact, one of my favorite bloggers has her twitter avatar as herself cosplaying Ms. Marvel. That is kind of a big deal. Also, my boyfriend is a huge, huge comic book nerd and so while we were in the comic book store in the mall, I was eyeing it and because he spoils me rotten, he bought it. I ended up trying to read this while enroute to Florida, but somehow I ended up craving my Kindle more. However, I finally finished this one just before Comic Con. Friends, I really enjoyed my time reading Ms. Marvel Vol 1: No Normal.

What’s The Story Here?

Ms. Marvel vol 1: No Normal is about a teenage girl named Kamala Khan. And here’s where I want to stop you. One thing that has always NOT appealed to me about comic books is how they all seem, to my  not so knowledgeable eye, to be based on the adventures boys get to have with females as an afterthought. I am not about that noise. When I read books or comics or entertainment, I want my gender to have some representation. So, knowing that so many female bloggers that I respect love this comic series made me so excited. Okay, so side note over.

Anyways, Kamala is a Muslim girl who lives in New Jersey. She usually stops at a convenience store where her friend works before school. One day, this popular blonde girl is there and starts talking about a party. Kamala decides she wants to go. She also convinces herself that the blonde girl is nice — she is not. So, yeah, Kamala sneaks out to the party and there’s this weird thing that happens and she wakes up with the super powers of Carol Danvers, the OG Ms. Marvel. And this book, truly, is about Kamala exploring those powers and her new identity. Also, about a super villain that comes into play too.

How Did I Like The Characters?

Basically Ms. Marvel vol 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson has turned me into a Kamala Khan fangirl. She’s so awesome! She likes the Avengers. She cares about her friends. She can be sassy. She’s also very brave in the face of danger. I quite admire that. I also liked Kamala’s parents, even though they punish her – but to be fair, she did break the rules and you should be consistent. So, yeah, they are great parents.

How’s The Art?

I have no real knowledge about comic book art, that’s on the boyfriend person. However, I liked what I saw. I mean, it is not manga style or anything, but it still felt female friendly. I didn’t notice any unrealistic bodies, except what was on purpose. I did not feel like the art was sexist or weird or offputting. So, in all, I am a fan of Adrian Alphona’s interpretation.

Will I Be Back For Volume 2?

YES. Heck yes I will.
