In My Mailbox (81) / Stacking The Shelves (2)

You guys, I am utterly thrilled that I FINALLY have a weekend of no plans and no social obligations. A three day weekend at that. I know normal people are all yay social times, and I get it. I love being social too. Yet there comes a point where I just want to nestle in my bedroom or lounge in my backyard with a book and a cold beverage, nothing but me and the story at hand. Since you are reading my blog, chances are that you are a reader so you know the feeling of a great plot and nowhere to go but the next page. This is a much needed weekend is all I am saying. As far as my book haul goes? It is pretty kickass. I’m thrilled with what came in my mail and on my ereader.

Stacking The Shelves, In My Mailbox, Books

Purchased:

Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh – Yes, so I actually read Nevermore and am not one of those people who is all OMFG I CAN’T WAIT FOR ENSHADOWED even though I don’t know who Isobel or Varen are. Y’all my excitement for this book is 100% genuine and once I finish Throne Of Glass and a few chapters of a tour book, I am diving right in, ready to read the hell out of Kelly Creagh’s sophomore book.

The Cavendish Home For Boys And Girls by Claire Legrand – I bought this because Legrand stopped by for a guest post and she was so gracious and polite and lovely with good music picks, that I just had to order her book. ALSO it is middle grade and the cover is so eyecatching in real life — the silver words actually shine. I am kind of in love with cover!

The Agency: A Spy In The House by YS Lee – (Kindle at $1.99) – I have been wanting to read this series for awhile but kind of balked at investing in it, even though it doesn’t actually cost that much. So I just patiently waited and HURRAH IT WAS ON SALE! For like one day only, but you better believe I snapped that noise up. OH, and this series is about a female spy who is a person of color in the Victorian Era. EXCITING.

The Agency: The Traitor In The Tunnel by YS Lee (Kindle at $2.99) – Again, the sale price had me and since I have a copy of the second book lying around the house, I figure I may as well complete the collection.

Sun And Moon, Ice And Snow by Jessica Day George (Kindle at $1.99) – I like Jessica Day George’s work, well, based on the one book I read by her I like it. At $1.99 it can’t hurt to snap it up.

Croak by Gina Damico (Kindle at $1.99) – So, Croak is set in upstate NY and I live in upstate and YOU GUYS I LOVE READING ABOUT BOOKS SET IN THE REGION THAT I LIVE. Granted, in NY everything above Westchester is considered upstate. This one is STILL on-sale, y’all.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (Free for Kindle) – I actually already own a hard cover of this book and several in the series. I liked Artemis Fowl and obsessively read them in high school I think it was. Anyways, at the price of FREE I was like why the heck not.

The Corpse-Rat King by Lee Battersby (Kindle at $6.01) – You ever get approved for a book on Netgalley then go to put it on your Kindle and discover hahaha it’s been archived like 3 days after you were approved? YEAH. So that happened. I was interested in still reading because of the Juliette Marillier blurb, so I looked on Amazon and luckily The Corpse-Rat King wasn’t expensive by any means so I bought it. Had it been over $9.99 I would have just said forget it. OH and looks like this is down to $4.89. I’d snap it up at that price if you are interested.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (Audible) – Holy Christ you guys. I listened to this book last week. It’s like 18 hours long and I would listen to it all day at work, in my car. I would carry it around the house. I also had it going just before I went to bed instead of settling in with a print book like I normally do. Gone Girl is freakin fantastic and I really, really think you need to check out the audiobook, as it is VERY well done. Plus if you are in a YA rut, this book is different enough and good enough to distract you and hopefully get you out of a reading funk. I can’t wait to write my review.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty (Audible) – I have a print copy of this but I bought it used and it definitely has seen better days and although I have it on my Fill In The Gaps list, I don’t foresee myself having time for it, so I thought given the great audio reviews, it might be time to turn my moldy used copy loose and listen to a crisp, digital file instead.

Genghis Khan And The Making Of The Modern World by Jack Weatherford (Audible) – I am a huge history nerd. Enough said.

Curse Of The Blue Tattoo by LA Meyer (Audible) – Given that I loved listening to the first book, Bloody Jack, I figured I ought to give book 2 a go.

Gifted:

The Hunger Games Blu-Ray – That awkward moment when your amazing coworkers get you a movie you’ve been looking forward to all year for your birthday and it is on Blu-Ray and all you own is a DVD player. 😛

For Review:

In A Fix by Linda Grimes (Unsolicted) – I feel a strange affinity towards this book because the author’s last name is exactly the same as someone very dear to me. I am excited about this, there’s even a Diana Gabaldon blurb and that’s kind of a really big deal to me.

The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini (Blog Tour) – I will be giving this copy away in addition to interviewing the offer. Y’all good times are ahead.

The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde (Vine) – I’ve only read the very first Thursday Next book, I liked it though. Anyways, this one has MAGIC so of course I made it one of my Vine choices. MAGIC!

A Dangerous Inheritance by Alison Weir (Vine) – I read my first Weir book, Innocent Traitor, about 2 or so years ago, it was also the first book I ever bought with an Audible credit and I loved it. It’s about Katherine Grey, Lady Jane Grey’s sister and Katherine Plantagenet, and holy hell am I pumped up.

Defiance by CJ Redwine (Unsolicited) – FINAL COPY OMG I WANT TO HUG YOUUUUU. But seriously, how can I not be excited about this book. I already read it and loved it and now this copy shall live on my shelves in perpetuity.

It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond (Unsolicited) – Okay, I won’t lie my heart exploded with AWWWWs when I opened this package of Halloween themed picture books. I plan to review the three I got altogether and then I am donating them to a friend’s classroom.

Mia: Time To Trick Or Treat by Robin Farley (Unsolicited) – So there’s a giraffe and a full page of stickers. Sign me up.

Just Say Boo by Susan Hood (Unsolicited) – I think this is my favorite of the three in the package. It’s got lovely, crisp Autumn colors, plus the illustrations look nice.

Better Than Chocolate by Sheila Roberts (Unsolicited) – Imagine my surprise when I was shaking the envelope because it felt weird, and then I opened it up and a chocolate bar fell out. The way to my heart is through my stomach. And sometimes my liver. Whatever, I am excited for the chocolate bar, OH YEAH and the book too.

Adaptation by Malinda Lo (Netgalley) – I loved Ash and am looking forward to Lo’s latest.

Send Me A Sign by Tiffany Schmidt (Netgalley)  – All I know is that this is contemporary and rumor has it that it is very good.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

Yesterday I keysmashed all over Defiance by CJ Redwine and wrote my longest review to date.

Allison can’t decide what she wants to read next. Help a sister out?

I reviewed Warped and come to the conclusion that when I am ill, comfort reads as opposed to new books are the way to go.

We gave some books away.

I’ve got some dirty little secrets.

Switching formats isn’t quite ideal, but the switch from print to audio is much easier than vice versa. Oh and I totally enjoyed Such Wicked Intent, as you can tell by my review.

Remember that time I decided to start a new feature and that it was time to learn some new skills? Quoted And Noted: “I Am Simply A Book Drunkard…” Aren’t we all?

  1. Wow. Lots of great books. I know what you mean by not having plans. Sometimes its nice to just sit with a book.

    Grace

  2. That’s a lot of books! Hope you enjoy them all!

  3. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow is my FAVORITE JDG book. One of my fave fairy tales, period, actually. So effing fantastic.

I love Laura Numeroff, that makes me happy.

Can’t decide if I want to read Adaptation, as I liked, but was also a bit disappointed with, Ash. I think I’ll wait for your review.

  4. Hmm, I sent that too soon, I still have things to say:

    1. Way to my heart = through my liver made me crack the hell up. (It’s truuuuue! “You know, if you drink enough wine, it tastes like love…” ;P )

    2. I love the new look!

    3. I have the weekend off toooooooo! That NEVER happens, especially if there is a holiday involved, so I am going to READ ALL TEH THINGS.
Also, scrub the bottle of nail polish out of my floor and weep a little. It was so pretty…

    Ok, now I’m done.

  5. I could live in your mailbox! I totally agree with the audio for Gone Girl. I usually only listen to audio books in the car, but I actually listened to some of Gone Girl while I was working out. Might not be the most conducive to building muscles and getting energized, but I just had to know what happened next! 😉

  6. Oh my gosh, Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow is soooooo good! I have read a number of Jessica Day George’s books, but this one is my favorite. I read it last summer, which felt sort of odd, because it is set in this cold, Scandinavia country. The setting is wonderful, though. I hope you like it.

  7. You got Enshadowed! You’re so lucky. I should be getting mine too soon, I hope. I need it so much! And I love Artemis Fowl. All the books! :]
    Thanks for stopping by!

  8. My daughters would love the Halloween books.. Great haul this week. I hope you enjoy all your new reads!

  13. Wow. Too many great books to mention, but I just gotta say, Gone Girl…oh yeah….There are about 450 holds on this book in my library system! Now you’ve made me want to listen to the audio. Hubby is reading it now…wish he would hurry so we can talk!

  14. Wow, what a great haul! I have Defiance to read (really want to get to it soon!), and also snapped up the Kindle deals of Croak (LOVE this book!) and Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. I’ll have to take a look at that MG book (I’m an elementary school librarian), and those picture books! I love anything by Laura Numeroff. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

    My Haul
I also have a giveaway (nternation) for Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas Here

  26. Thanks for stopping by my STS! I’ve seen Defiance around a lot this week, it looks like a good one. Enjoy!

    Happy reading.

  28. You got tons of awesome books this week!! I really need to get The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls. It sounds really good. I just read In A Fix and it was good. Awesome haul!!

  29. Gone Girl is the best book I’ve read this year, heck in the past couple of years actually. I got an ARC and was part of GIllian Flynn’s blog tour for the launch of Gone Girl, and I was so excited to read that book early because I’ve been a fan since her Sharp Objects days. Now I can’t wait to see what she puts out next. But you’ve definitely got me interested in the audio, I think I’ll have to listen to that and check it out again.

    My IMM

  30. I’ve been hearing about Gone Girl for months and months. I really must try to get to it!

  31. I saw some of LeGrand’s tour stops and I’m dying to read Cavendish now! I hope you love it! Defiance looks really great, as well.

    Happy Reading! (:

  32. Yay for no social obligations. I however, am not so lucky. lol. My best friend is up from Maryland this weekend, so I’ll be taking Aubrey down to visit her for a little today. I’m reading Julie Kagawa’s The Lost prince at the moment, so I’ve been dreaming up excuses on why we cant come. <— horrible, I'm a horrible person. lol I'm going though. :o)

That blows about the hunger games dvd. 🙁 But holy cute to the kiddie Halloween books! I just took Aubrey to a new book store that opened up by me. they sell new books for a real good discount. She went crazy. Throwing book in my cart left and right. A bunch of Halloween ones made the cut. I was thinking of doing a kiddie review of them with her. I can't wait to see your review of those.

Hope your having a wonderful quiet weekend! 🙂

  33. Wow, great haul this week! The cover for Just Say Boo is adorable 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  34. Wow, that’s quite the haul. I really need to find the time to squeeze Defiance in. It seems like such a great book!

    Happy reading,
    Christina
The Book Hookup: Eat. Breathe. Read!

  35. Dude, Claire is AHMAZING. I was going to buy the kindle version of Cavendish but now you have me convinced I need that gorgeous hardcover. WAH.

  36. It’s hard to believe Enshadowed is actually out now! It felt like it would never get here. Needless to say, I legit freaked out when I got a copy. As much as I want to dive right in, I’m trying to find a time when I know I’ll have some time to myself. I definitely do NOT want to be interrupted in the middle of it.

I’ve been wanting to read The Agency books for a while and I had no idea they were so cheap!

Artemis Fowl will forever and always hold a special place in my heart. I haven’t managed to read the last few, but I’ve been planning on doing a reread of the entire series and hopefully that’ll happen soon!

I’m reading The Corpse-Rat King right now and it’s good. (Also, I HATE when a book expires right after I get it!)

SO many customers come into my bookstore and ask for Gone Girl. I’m all about thrillers and from what I’ve heard it sounds like something I’d love. I heard there’s a movie in the works! (Or maybe a tv show? One of the two)

    JASPER FFORDE YESSSSSS. ♥

Those children’s books look absolutely adorable oh my gosh.

  37. wow! That is a huge haul!! Defiance is up there on my list! I am hoping my tomorrow is spent reading on the couch-gotta love long weekends! 🙂
    ~Celeste

  38. A Spy in the House is excellent. I don;t know why I haven’t read the rest of the series yet!

  43. Fabulous haul, I hope you’re enjoying Throne of Glass; I’ve not read Nevermore, but I’ve been hearing of Enshadowed recently. What lovely colleagues, I haven’t got Blu-ray either; looking forward to getting the DVD.Thanks for stopping by earlier; hope you enjoy all your books 🙂

  44. Okay first thing:
    – I love the new outlook. I reckon it fits you better than the other one. It’s sleek and elegant.
    – The Last Dragon Slayer. Hmm. It’s more middle grade than young adult, I felt. And if you liked Going Bovine by Libba Bray, you’ll like this one. I recommend Fforde’s Shades of Gray (amazing dystopian) and the Nursery Rhyme Crime series.
    – I can’t wait to read Kelly Creagh’s second book. I recently found the first one in pristine condition at a secondhand bookstore. I’ll look forward to your review of it.

    Have fun reading!

  45. Oh wauw, I love your haul. The best I’ve seen so far! There are so many books I want to read, so great ^^ Happy reading!

  54. 1. Loving the new layout.
    2. YOU WILL LOVE AGENCY. A lot.
    3. Amazon Vine forever!

  55. SO many great books!! I don’t know how I’d do with audiobooks (I don’t tend to like ’em too much.. can’t focus on someone telling me the story rather than me reading it) but I did read Gone Girl about a month ago.. it’s pretty crazy!

I picked up The Agency on Kobo a while back actually.. kinda forgot about it – so thank you for reminding me! 🙂

Happy reading, and thanks for stopping by!
