Why Did I Listen To Grimm’s Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm?

Grimm’s Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm is a treasure trove of classic stories that you basically have to be living under a rock in the back of a super deep cave to have never heard. These stories are a part of our collective history – well, those of us living in the Western world that is. Their influence has taken root in various Disney movies which basically I grew up OBSESSED with. So, when I saw this book available within the Volumes app for review I knew that I immediately had to download and listen to it. Also, the Listening Library version of Grimm’s Fairy Tales contains basically the dream team of audiobook narrators.

What’s The Story Here?

More like – WHAT ARE THE STORIES HERE?! So basically, there’s a lot of stories contained within this audiobook of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. There’s Cinderella, The Elves, Hansel And Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin and much, much more. Legit, I don’t even know how to describe them to you except that if you’ve read fairy tale inspired books or have seen like all the Disney movies, you will know these stories.

How’s The Writing?

So, these stories are timeless, but also, as an adult listener, my critical cap was on. First off, I learned that elves are kind of jerks. I mean, the shoemaker decides to be nice and give them clothes and like Dobby, apparently the clothes free them and they run away. Also, dwarves are jerks too – especially ones who get their beards stuck in trees and when you help them get all pissed off. Oh, and royal people just go around murdering all their suitors until their impossible tasks are completed by one person. I mean, what? Can’t you just say, sorry not interested instead of killing! So, I guess these fairy tales are a lot more gruesome than their Disney versions. It’s kind of awesome though.

How’s The Narration?

Grimm’s Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm released by Listening Library is a veritable smorgasborg of excellence when it comes to audiobook narration. After being very disappointed by the audiobook of The Wind In The Willows, I could not be more pleased with the narration and production of this book. In fact, while I was driving, I was thinking this audiobook was a nice sampler of the most famous names within audiobook narration today. Each narrator is perfect for their story. Each one brings a wealth of skill and craft to the table. I also found myself wanting to listen to more by the new to me narrators in this audiobook. The only person missing was Nick Podehl but otherwise, wow, this audiobook nails it with the best of the business. I highly recommend you get yourself this audiobook if you want a short listen and are new to audiobooks and want to find a few good narrators to check out. Also, if you have kids who can handle violence and twisted situations.
