"Coraline meets Monsters, Inc. in this delightfully entertaining offering from actor [Jason] Segel and co-author [Kirsten] Miller."—Publishers Weekly
The hilariously frightening, middle-grade novel Nightmares! is the first book in a trilogy about a boy named Charlie and a group of kids who must face their fears to save their town.

Sleeping has never been so scary. And now waking up is even worse! Charlie Laird has several problems.  1. His dad married a woman he is sure moonlights as a witch.2. He had to move into her purple mansion, which is NOT a place you want to find yourself after dark.3.He can’t remember the last time sleeping wasn’t a nightmarish prospect. Like even a nap.  What Charlie doesn’t know is that his problems are about to get a whole lot more real. Nightmares can ruin a good night’s sleep, but when they start slipping out of your dreams and into the waking world—that’s a line that should never be crossed. And when your worst nightmares start to come true . . . well, that’s something only Charlie can face. And he’s going to need all the help he can get, or it might just be lights-out for Charlie Laird. For good.Praise for Nightmares!A New York Times Bestseller!

Why Did I Listen To This Audiobook?

I have said this in many of my posts but I quite like books by celebrities. Granted, I lean heavily toward shady tell-alls. Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller, however, appealed to me. I love Jason Segel, his character Marshall is totally my favorite on How I Met Your Mother. So based on that shallow reason, I decided to give the audiobook of Nightmares! a chance. Also? It is a horror for middle graders, and I love that kind of thing.

What’s The Story Here?

Main character Charlie Laird has got some difficulties going on. You see, his mom died, which already sucks. But then, his dad eventually moves on as adults are wont to do. He marries this woman in the neighborhood whom Charlie is convinced is a witch. Also? They have to leave the home that Charlie loves and move into her weird purple mansion. Meanwhile, Charlie begins to have these nightmares that involve his little brother. However, it turns out that his friends are showing up in his nightmares as well. Yet, the nightmares are not necessarily evil. Instead, they are a means for Charlie to face his fears. Just, Charlie isn’t immediately in on that and would rather assume they are the doing of his stepmother, Charlotte. Alas, Charlie, his friends, and even a male Medusa character named Meduso ban together to stop another character who actually does have nefarious intentions for the land of Nightmares!.

How Did I Like Charlie?

I thought that the main character of Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller’s Nightmares!, Charlie, was kind of annoying at first. Then, I had to take my adult hat off. You see, he is going through transition and a tough situation. So, of course, he isn’t going to be some well behaved robot. Also, even adults still have trouble expressing themselves and their feelings. I can’t quite blame Charlie for not being perfect. He ended up growing on me though, and I even found myself rooting for him throughout the book.

Will I Be Back For The Sequel?

Via audio – absolutely yes I will!

How’s The Narration?

Nightmares! is narrated by Jason Segel. If you’ve seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall and remember the part with the vampire puppet show, YES. That’s what his narration made me flash back to. Segel does all manner of ridiculous and different voices and I loved pretty much every minute of that. For real, this is such a fun book to listen to via audio. If you are inclined to check this one out as I was, do yourself a favor and grab the audiobook edition.

LOL this GIF is kind of perfect, because this book is about things that scare you, and Signs is definitely scary.

  1. I first came across this book a few months ago on another blog, and had no idea that Jason had written a book, or books. I love him as an actor, so of course I want to read this one. Great review!

  2. It’s so fun that Jason Segel is the one who narrates the audiobook! I think it would make for an incredibly entertaining listening experience. Glad you enjoyed the story 😉
