Why Did I Listen To This Book?

You ever start a few audiobooks at once but like throwing spaghetti, it just doesn’t seem to stick? Prior to listening to Love In The Afternoon by Alison Packard, I could not find an audiobook to stick. I had wanted to listen to a non fiction for something different, but The Pixar Touch, the one that I had began was not holding my attention. I kept looking at the cover of Packard’s audio, drawn to it. Finally, I decided to download it onto my app as it had been sitting on the list for a few years – at one point, the audiobook was offered for free through some audible promotion and so, I immediately grabbed it and then just did not listen to it. What I began doing was listening to Love In The Afternoon between books and at night with a sleep timer before I fell asleep. Thankfully, this was the sort of book that does not require all of your attention so it was exactly perfect for that in between palate cleanse type of listen.

What’s The Story Here?

Kayla Maxwell is a former scream queen – finding fame in horror movies. Now, though, she wants something different for herself. So, she takes her career in a totally different direction – soap operas. Kayla is fine with this because she’s watched soaps almost all her life. Her character, Shea, has been impregnated by one of the popular guys on the show, only the people want him to end up with this other character. That’s fine because the writers have decided to pair Kayla’s character, Shay with Jared, Sean Barrett’s character. Talk about a breakout role. The two have major on screen chemistry. What they are about to discover is that the chemistry extends to off screen as well. Alas, Kayla’s new found success is not without its drawbacks. She begins receiving threatening notes from a stalker who won’t let her live her past down. Alison Packard’s Love In The Afternoon follows Kayla as she tries to avoid a stalker and begins to explore a relationship with her costar Sean, despite her no actors rule.

How’s The Romance?

Whoa, you guys, this is one steamy audiobook. I won’t lie, when I realized there were going to be sexytimes partway through the audiobook, I went and looked for some earphones because even listening to it quietly while on the speaker made me blush a little bit.

I thought that Kayla and Sean were a fun pairing. As a couple, they make sense. Both come into the relationship with a true passion for what they do – acting. Both have been a little bit burned in the past. And they have some intense physical chemistry. But more than that, they respect each other. I liked how Sean admired the kind things that Kayla does without thinking. She’s such a wonderful person and he’s a good guy so of course, it was awesome to see them pair off. However, there’s a bit of drama involved in Love In The Afternoon which makes sense because honestly, this would be so boring if it was all perfect all the time.

How’s The Narration?

Love In The Afternoon is narrated by Gia St. Claire. She’s an awesome narrator. Her voice made me really like Kayla. She’s got this sort of girl next door voice – in that her voice is warm and fresh and it works wonders for this book. She also doesn’t sound awkward or weird when she narrates Sean. However, I will say that this book took me forever to get through because well, I am not exactly going to listen to it in the car or while I am trying to zoom through my paperwork at the office simply because no one wants to hear about the character’s desire pooling. So, yes, this is a great at home kind of audio, but for me, personally, not a listen to in public spots audio. I would recommend it if you are looking for something light and easy.

Pretty much why I listened to this at home.

  1. Haha. Okay, I totally want to read this now. Listen to! I get a little embarrassed when I’m listening to audios with sexytimes too, but now I’ve listened to a few, and they don’t really make me uncomfortable. Although I do turn the volume down. 🙂
