Review: Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein + Giveaway

Catherine Archer, an orphan has been selected for the chance to be one of Queen Elizabeth’s maids in waiting in Cate Of The Lost Colony by Lisa Klein. It is the chance of a lifetime, as working for the Queen reflects a potential positive change in fortune. Catherine finds love with one of the Queen’s favorites, Sir Walter Raleigh. However, this draws the Queen’s ire. I am sure you can infer from the title what will happen. Think Roanoke, the lost colony! When in Roanoke, Cate finds herself attracted to a native, Manteo. With her heart trapped between two worlds, Cate must make a tough decision.

I suppose this could be classified as historical romance for the younger set. Personally, I consider historical romance to be one of my non-guilty pleasures (I derive joy from historical romance, but don’t feel guilty at all about it). I was quite excited for Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein, and for the most part it did not disappoint. I mean, for real the majority of books in the YA segment that I see are paranormal, dystopian, and contemporary. There’s the rare historical fiction here and there, so of course I see Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein as contributing to filling the void, I mean more books about Roanoke please! Seriously, history is so interesting, especially because a lot of historical fiction is inspired by true events, and what a great way to learn about the past.

I think what struck me the most about Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein is Catherine Archer’s character growth. She grows from being somewhat quiet and shy to becoming capable. She is better able to vocalize her opinions and decisions. We see her independence shine. I like seeing a character change in a logical manner. I felt Cate’s changes made sense. It wasn’t anything where you think um, what the what? HOWEVER, I will admit predictability. I thought it was fairly obvious from the foreshadowing and first few chapters who Cate was going to choose. That did not exactly take away my enjoyment, but there is something to be said for excitement when you really can’t guess who the heroine chooses.

Overall,Cate Of The Lost Colony by Lisa Klein was a nice way to connect with the past and learn about history. I did enjoy this book, but it was a quick read. I know, most people get excited about quick reads, but I often like to savor. I think there could have been a bit more depth. I mean, I had a strong sense of Cate, but not of her love interests.
