Mother. Hero. Liar. Killer. How can you tell when all you have is...
PIECES OF HER
What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?
Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?
But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.
The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

I love when books start off with a bang and immediately draw you in. Pieces Of Her by Karin Slaughter is immediately engaging right off the bat. This was my first book by Slaughter but absolutely not the last. I had been intending to read this book for awhile — knowing that it was becoming a Netflix show. Also, because it was on my shelves and I am on a mission to get them somewhat cleared. Additionally, I am trying to gather up the thriller books on my shelf to pass along to a friend of a friend.

Pieces Of Her opens up with a shooting. Andy and her mother, Laura, are in a diner having brunch for Andrea’s birthday. Unfortunately, this is the same day that Jacob Helsinger has decided to enter the diner, shoot two women and potentially shoot a third person. Laura is utterly calm and stops the shooting but also kills Helsinger with a knife. She then comes under suspicion. Meanwhile, what happens in the diner launches all kinds of questions for Andrea. As it turns out though, Laura’s past catches right up and so she sends Andy on the run to protect her. Andrea comes across some real shady characters and is not at all sure who to trust. She’ll figure it out fast though as that’s the only way she’s going to survive.

Wow, okay, so this book is basically 500 pages but I read it in about two days. I could NOT set it down. The chapters are really long which is something I typically don’t care for, but ya’ll, I was turning those pages. I could not wait to get to the bottom of Laura’s past and see what would happen to Andrea next. I loved the way it all played out plotwise. Also, I can see how some people wouldn’t like Andrea, because she is a failure to launch 31 year old. She doesn’t really seem to have a whole lot going on for herself. Personally, I liked her journey and how she evolved throughout the book. And!! The bits on Laura’s past as we got Pieces Of Her had me hooked.

If you’re someone who likes thrillers — especially thrillers written by women — pick this book up. I promise you will have zero regrets.
