With her brother’s grumpy best friend—and her longtime nemesis—as Beth’s flight instructor, her pilot lessons could be a plane disaster or their first-class ticket to forever.
Mayday. Mayday. Engine failure.
When flying with George Bunsen, the last thing Beth Lundberg wants is to be horny in the cockpit. But when her first ride-along dives toward disaster, the perpetually stoic George is forced to execute a skillful emergency landing, and Beth is horrified to find herself with an adrenaline-fueled crush on the pilot. She’s even more shocked when her brother’s best friend offers her discounted flight lessons—possibly out of guilt for almost killing them.
And despite George’s annoying habit of departing any room the moment Beth enters, she really wants to accept. No matter that it’s an egregiously expensive hobby, or that her waitressing wages go right toward her mother’s medical bills, or that she’s already in debt up to her eyebrows. Flying is Beth’s dream, and she could use her private license to earn real money.
The more time they spend navigating the sky, the more the turbulence between George and Beth dissipates. But Beth has seen the burning wreckage that comes from mixing business with pleasure—plus, she’s been keeping a secret that, once revealed, will send all her relationships into a tailspin. Can she really take a risk on romance when her pilot career isn’t even off the ground?
Why Did I Listen To Love In Plane Sight by Lauren Connolly?
Love In the Plane Sight by Lauren Connolly appealed to me because I love romance novels where the main characters do adventurous things. I had previously listened to Connolly’s PS I Hate You and LOVED it — that was another book where the main characters do adventurous things. So, I trusted this book would be along those lines and I would also enjoy it. I was right! Love In Plane Sight had just the right mix of serious and adventure and I just loved Beth, the main point of view character.
What’s The Story Here?
Beth has a dream to be a pilot and fly planes. However, she has a big loan to pay back to her brother – she borrowed money to pay for her mom’s medical treatment. Her brother Sean thinks she will be getting access to a trust fund when she turns 25, so it won’t be a big deal. Only, Beth’s father doesn’t have a trust fund set up for her. FYI, she is the product of an affair between Sean’s father and Beth’s mother who was one of his employees at the big luxury transportation company he runs. So, Beth works as a waitress and has been saving her money to pay Sean back with some of it set aside for flight lessons. She’s made enough to pay for her first ride along flight with George Bunson — Sean’s stoic best friend. As they are flying, the engine fails. George’s quick thinking and calmness under fire saves them and he lands them safely on a road. Beth catches feelings. So, the story follows Beth navigating her feelings for George as well as navigating life as someone who is struggling financially. George eventually starts giving her free lessons and chemistry blossoms between them. Will it all fall apart once Beth’s lie to Sean about her “trust fund” come to light?
How Did I Like Love In Plane Sight?
As it turns out, I have enjoyed the second book I’ve picked up by Lauren Connolly. Beth is a compelling character – I loved her work ethic and her pride. She has a deep care for her family – her mother and her wife. By the way, I also loved reading about the characters who work at the diner Cornfields with Beth – especially her best friend Delilah. Beth has not had anything handed to her and also not only has to deal with her class – but also deal with sexism when trying to join a flight club. Yet, she perseveres. It’s not all bad. She has a book club with her brother, Sean. They are passionate about what they read, annotate and have great taste in books. That little part of the book was a joy to read. Oh and I loved the chemistry between Beth and George. It takes such a long time for them to act on their feelings, but it all pays off so perfectly and the romance feels earned.
How’s The Narration?
The audiobook of Love In Plane Sight is narrated by Karissa Vacker. I thought Vacker did a phenomenal job. I could feel the emotions of Beth as she read. She also did not make the male characters sound weird. The narration moved along at a perfect clip. The audiobook is 10 hours 53 minutes unabridged. I did listen to this slightly sped up.
