“The Amazing Race" meets Around the World in 80 Days as a woman desperate to save her family bookstore falls for her competition.
Born and raised in New York City, Ramona Keene dreams of attending photography school and traveling to Paris, but her reality never quite catches up with her imagination. Instead, she works at her uncles' quaint bookstore, where the tea is plentiful and all the adventures are between the covers of secondhand books. But when the new landlord arrives with his Evil Nephew in tow, Romy's quiet life comes crashing down. He plans to triple the rent, something her uncles can't afford.
In order to earn the money to help save the bookstore, Romy applies for a job at ExLibris Expeditions, a company that re-creates literary journeys. Romy snags the oddest internship ever: retrace Phileas Fogg's journey from Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days and plan a suitable, contemporary adventure for a client. The task is close to impossible; sticking to the original route means no commercial aircraft permitted, and she’s got a lot less than eighty days to work with. Shaking off her fear of leaving home, Romy takes on the challenge, only to discover she’s got competition. Worse, Dominic Madison turns out to be the – unfortunately hot – nephew of her family’s worst enemy.
Can Romy win the race and circle the globe in time to save the bookstore? And what happens when she starts to fall for the very person who may just be the death of her dreams?
Why Did I Listen To Eighty Days To Elsewhere by K.C. Dyer?
Eighty Days To Elsewhere by KC Dyer is a book about a book seller and travel with the enemies to lovers trope, of course it appealed to me. This one came out during the pandemic — and in particular — during a time when I thought I would be much better about reading and reviewing, but well, I got distracted by having a whole other kid. Regardless, books don’t expire or go bad, so here I am FINALLY listening to Eighty Days To Elsewhere. Also, there is nothing that beats going through your backlist TBR via audiobook.
What’s The Story Here?
Eighty Days To Elsewhere follows Romy who was an aspiring photographer. However, life happens, and so Romy ended up working in her uncle’s bookstore. Life is not bad, she gets to be surrounded by books and she’s sort of happy. Things change when the building the bookstore is in happens to be sold. The new landlord is not a good person and raises the rent with the expectation that the new rent is paid in a short time or the store is evicted. Romy is determined to get the money to save the store. She hears about Ex Libris Travels and applies for a job with them. The pay is extraordinary. However, to get the job she must travel around the world in eighty days — without using commercial airline travel. Oh, and she’ll be competing for the job against Dominic, who just so happens to be the nephew to the new landlord. It is the adventure of a lifetime. Oh, and Dominic might not be so bad.
How Did I Like Eighty Days To Elsewhere?
Honestly, this book was okay. I liked that Romy really had her eyes opened to different cultures as she was traveling the world. Some parts felt a little heavy handed and maybe not… authentic, per se. I did like the love interest, Dominic. He was interesting – as we got to see his personality and how he’s not a bad person. This book will not stick with me though.
How’s The Narration?
The audiobook of Eighty Days To Elsewhere is narrated by Lauren Ezzo. I think maybe that was the highlight of my experience with this book. Lauren Ezzo is a superb narrator and made the story a bit more likeable for me. It is 13 hours 58 minutes long – if you decide to read this, go the audiobook route.
