I really absolutely enjoy Alisha Rai’s books. While You Were Dreaming is a wonderful addition to her list of titles. I picked this book up when I was feeling the urge to read a young adult contemporary with a few serious themes. It absolutely fit the bill and kept my attention while I was walking on the treadmill as well as at other moments.
While You Were Dreaming follows Sonia, a high school girl who helps save her crush from drowning after he has a medical incident and falls in the canal. Let me rewind that. She saves him while wearing a mask and a super hero costume. There are people who witness the rescue, but she runs away before the authorities can catch up. Why? Well, her mom was deported and she lives in an apartment with her undocumented sister who is 18 and now her guardian. Sonia has had so many daydreams about James but she’s finding the reality doesn’t quite match to her expectations. But, James has a surly brother named Niam who goes to a different school and may be a better fit for her.
I love that this book had some more serious themes. Alisha Rai handled Sonia’s issues with confidence and self worth in such a realistic and sensitive way. I was absolutely rooting for Sonia the WHOLE book. It was hard to see the different things she struggled with. However, at the same time, I was so excited when she found her confidence and her courage. Also, at how the different relationships in the book changed — particularly between Sonia and her sister. The issue with immigration was handled thoughtfully as well. I found it so easy to empathize with Sonia. Be sure to pick up While You Were Dreaming for a solid, serious contemporary read. Also, this would be a solid read for AAPI Recognition Month.
