Loveless by Alice Oseman seemed like a logical conclusion to pick off my shelves. You see, I had recently binge read the Heartstopper graphic novels and thought this book might also give me the same sort of feeling. As it turns out, I did not fall in love with Loveless. There’s an audience to be sure, but this book just didn’t hit me quite as hard as I had hoped it would.
Oseman’s Loveless follows Georgia who is about to go to college with her best friends Pip and Jason. As it turns out, Georgia does not get a single room like most people but has a roommate named Rooney. Georgia is a person who is quiet and has a very small circle of friends. Georgia has never been kissed and is still a virgin. Her friend Pip is a lesbian. Jason comes across as being straight. Georgia ends up joining the Pride society and that is where she learns a term for what her sexuality is — aromantic asexual. The year also enfolds where Rooney forms a Shakespeare society and gets Pip, Jason, and the Pride society president Sunhil to join along with Georgia. Pip and Rooney have an antagonism between them that cracks.
First, I absolutely adore the cover of Loveless. The colors, the people, the crowd! It immediately catches my eye. I also am so glad that people who are asexual get representation with this book. I didn’t really know a whole lot about the asexual orientation until I read this book. However, what I didn’t love was that this book was such a slow read. The font is really, really tiny. The pacing felt glacial to me. A lot of this book is so internal- very much about Georgia’s inner life and thoughts. This is fine, but I have really been in the mood for fast paced reads lately and so, this just was not for me. That’s fine, I am able to freely recommend this to people who are looking for more of a cerebral read about realizing you are asexual.
