Getting Over Max Cooper by Marcelle Karp | Audiobook Review

Why Did I Listen To Getting Over Max Cooper by Marcelle Karp?

As the weather starts to warm up and the snow starts to melt, I find myself being more interested in stories set during summer. Getting Over Max Cooper by Marcelle Karp is set during summer on Fire Island and has ice cream on the cover.  Of course I wanted to pick this audiobook up. Also? I didn’t mention the fact that it was a short listen which shoots it right up my priority list.

What’s The Story Here?

Jasmine “Jazz” Jacobsen has been going to Fire Island for the summer since she was two. She’s sixteen now. This summer promises to be amazing. She gets to work at an ice cream shop. Macy Whelan, Jazz’s best friend is back for the summer. Jazz has a pretty great group of friends on Fire Island too. There’s a new boy on the island as well – Leo. Jazz is attracted to him and he might be good boyfriend material. Putting a damper over her summer though is how her friend Macy’s ex, Max Cooper is treating her. He is being such a jerk. However, based on Macy’s behaviors, maybe Jazz doesn’t quite have the full story.

How Did I Like Getting Over Max Cooper?

I thought for the most part Getting Over Max Cooper was a fun read. I mean, minus the whole Macy obsession piece. That part was quite uncomfortable to read. However, it did offer a unique and different perspective. I think that when you’re young, a breakup can seem like the end of the world and like there isn’t anyone else. So, you convince yourself that the person truly is the one for you and there isn’t anyone else out there. It can be so hard to move on when you feel such strong feelings. I thought this book did a good job of balancing the tough feelings with showing that Macy’s actions were not right. Also, I liked that Jazz was multifaceted — with her job and her interest in photography and cameras.

How’s The Narration?

The audiobook of Marcelle Karp’s Getting Over Max Cooper is narrated by Phoebe Strole who is someone I’ve listened to a lot. Naturally, I really liked Strole. Her voice is easy to listen to. The production values were at the level I expect. Plus, at 6 hours and 48 minutes, this book basically flew by. I did end up listening at 1.25x speed just because I’ve been feeling pressure to get through books a little faster lately.
