Why Did I Listen To Ten Things I Hate About The Duke by Loretta Chase?
Ten Things I Hate About You is one of my favorite teen movies. In fact, it is one of the first DVDs my family ever owned and got a whole lot of play at my house growing up. Naturally, Ten Things I Hate About The Duke by Loretta Chase appealed to me. I was so excited to listen to a historical romance retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Also? I thought it would be cool to see what Loretta Chase’s own spin on the story would be.
What’s The Story Here?
Ten Things I Hate About The Duke stars Cassandra Pomfret in the “shrew” role. She has very strong opinions and is not afraid to voice them. Her dad is getting a bit annoyed with it. So, in hopes of taming Cassandra, makes a deal that her younger sister cannot get married until Cassandra gets married. Her dad believes a man will calm Cassandra down and make her less fiercely independent and opinionated. To which I say, LOL k.
To complicate matters, an incident occurs with the Duke of Ashworth which is about to ruin Cassandra’s reputation and that of her family. This means that her sister is about to get screwed over when it comes to her chances at marriage. However, the Duke is a pretty good guy so he wants to make things right. And so, he offers to marry Cassandra. She’s resistant, but he tries to win her over.
What Did I Think Of Ten Things I Hate About The Duke?
Overall, I found it kind of hard to get into this book. I would not necessarily blame it on the book though, just my frame of mind. It didn’t really immediately grab me. I also just was not super invested. However, maybe if I had picked this up at a different time and not felt so impatient to get through this audiobook I would have liked it more. I would recommend this book to people who like Shakespeare retellings. Also, Cassandra is a pretty wonderful character. If you like a headstrong leading lady (I do), then you might enjoy Ten Things I Hate About The Duke.
How’s The Narration?
The audiobook is narrated by Kate Redding. It is 12 hours and 17 minutes unabridged. Redding is a decent narrator, she’s easy to listen to. Plus her voice sounds all proper and what you’d expect for someone narrating a regency romance. Overall, audiobook wasn’t a bad choice but I was getting pretty antsy due to the length. Again, that’s a me issue and not at all an issue with this book, so give it a shot via audiobook or in your preferred format if you think it sounds interesting.
