Why Did I Listen To This Book?
I listened to the audiobook Still Foolin’ ‘Em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going And Where The Hell Are My Keys by Billy Crystal, also narrated by Billy Crystal because I was feeling so burnt out on secret audio project books that I needed a change. I chose this audiobook specifically because I love Billy Crystal something fierce and I was curious what it would be like. Also, because Tony and I had a two hour trip to the mall for Christmas shopping and I wanted to make progress on my Goodreads challenge, so I figured this book would really help with that and also would be a neutral listen. ALSO, I just really love celebrity narrated memoirs. Haters gon hate, yo.
What’s The Story Here?
Essentially, the subtitle of Still Foolin’ ‘Em says it all. Billy Crystal’s audiobook is a look back at his career, a glimpse of what he wants to do and also vignettes on aging. I really liked it. He talks about growing up on Long Island and going to Yankees games with his dad. He talks about his uncle’s jazz label and what it was like to grow up in a family who was in show business. He goes on about being a Jew and how their holidays just are not as fun as Christmas and Easter, it’s actually really funny. Then omg, we get behind the scene stories from his work on SOME OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME, at least according to me — When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride. There’s bits about his friendship with Muhammad Ali. We also learn how he got his start and about his personal life. Basically if you have your head screwed on right and are humble, being famous is awesome. There’s some really touching and poignant stories in Still Foolin’ ‘Em. There’s also bits that are totally hilarious that absolutely had Tony and I laughing in the car.
What Did I Learn?
- Old people still have sex. Ewww.
- Some of the Yankees are really cool.
- People come up to Billy Crystal and tell him to have fun storming the castle.
- Rob Reiner had to show Meg Ryan how to do the orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally.
- Also? The old lady who says I’ll have what she’s having? That is Rob Reiner’s mother. LOL.
- Billy Crystal is STILL married to his first wife, wow, it’s a hollywood miracle.
- I basically want to live his life because it sounds awesome.
- Monsters, Inc is important to Billy Crystal because of 9/11.
How Is The Narration?
Obviously, Billy Crystal is a flawless narrator. Like, he knows what the heck he is doing, narrating his own books and considering the voice work he has done it comes as no surprise. There are parts that are recorded before a live audience where it sounds like there is a laugh track — I didn’t much care for that, I would have rather he just narrated and let the reader trust when to laugh. But, I get it, some of the book is stand up and I enjoy stand up comedy. There are swears and Crystal drops a few fucks here and there. If you are like, ohhhh no, curse words, this is probably not the audiobook for you. If you like audiobooks that will make you laugh hysterically, chances are you will LOVE this book. It is 8 hours and 6 minutes long. It is produced by Macmillan Audio. Still Foolin’ ‘Em by Billy Crystal is one of my new favorite listens. I would recommend it if you are feeling burnt out or stressed from reading one sort of book over and over and over. Also, it’s just really funny — with a few emotional moments. Kind of like his movies!

This hater is not gonna hate, which probably means I’m not a hater, but whatever let’s roll with it, kay? Basically, I have no interest in memoirs until it’s a celebrity memoir, mostly because they have pretty/interesting voices, and ngl any dirt I will totally enjoy. I mean, they’ll mostly be three star books for me, but whatever it is a nice audio listen.
DUDE, I am so reading this. SOLD.
