Daniel Garrett is no stranger to heartache or tragedy. Once a successful detective, his world fell apart with his son's murder and his wife's suicide. Leaving the police force, Daniel devotes his life to finding missing children, but when a case goes sour on the anniversary of his personal tragedy, he returns to Eternity Springs hoping for some of the town's fabled healing.
Shannon O'Toole isn't looking for romance. After her fiancé's death, she closed off her heart. But she can't deny the spark between her and a sexy stranger at a friend's wedding. Shannon has her own secrets and has no place in her life for a private detective, even one who moves her as much as Daniel. But when the pair are thrown together on a case, the magic of Eternity Springs just might give them a second chance.

Why’d I Pick This Book to Read:

Heartsong Cottage had been recommended to me by the wonderful folks at St. Martin’s Press via Netgalley. Upon reading the description, I felt that this book would fit perfectly into my list of books to read this year for the Christmas season. It sounded like a nice contemporary story with characters who were looking for redemption and peace during the holiday season. Add in a dash of sweet romance, and it sounded like it would be a perfect for the holiday season.

Why did I DNF:

There was something about the way that Heartsong Cottage was being written that simply didn’t appeal to me. It seemed way too dark to me to be a holiday or winter type of story. I know that not all holidays are happy-go-lucky but I think that is what I was looking for when I started this one and ultimately it didn’t pan out. Also, I didn’t care for the way that the main character, Shannon, reacted after her one night stand with Daniel, a stranger from out of town. Yes, I can understand freaking out a bit for sleeping with someone who you hardly know but at the same time, her reaction to the circumstances, and what was going on around her didn’t mesh well with me. To me, there was a slight air of shaming a woman for having sexual desires, and I just couldn’t get behind it. Also, the Daniel just gave me a weird vibe as well. I don’t know what it was but because of these feelings I decided to stop while I was ahead because I felt I wouldn’t like what was still to happen either especially when I could already kind of predict it in my head.

Is there anyone this book would appeal to:

I think this book may appeal to someone who is looking for something a little different than the normal “happy” Christmas story. In fact, I’ve come across several other reviews where the story has been enjoyable, and people have liked the characters, and the way that the romance was constructed. Who knows … maybe I’m the odd one out on this one. As we know, it is all up to personal preference, and this one just was not for me!
