Japanese decluttering guru Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up has revolutionized homes—and lives—across the world. Now, Kondo presents an illustrated guide to her acclaimed KonMari Method, with step-by-step folding illustrations for everything from shirts to socks, plus drawings of perfectly organized drawers and closets. She also provides advice on frequently asked questions, such as whether to keep â€œnecessary” items that may not bring you joy. With guidance on specific categories including kitchen tools, cleaning supplies, hobby goods, and digital photos, this comprehensive companion is sure to spark joy in anyone who wants to simplify their life.

Spark Joy by Marie Kondo is a book that I borrowed from the library when I was on a personal development/self-help/ decluttering kick. I bought The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up last year or maybe the year before. It had actually changed my perspective about hoarding things and helped me to let go of things. However, I needed a refresher because unfortunately things began to pile back up again. I am kind of glad the library had this in stock for me to read (and not add to my pile at home). But, on the other hand, I do wish I had my own copy to refer to now and again.

If you’re wondering, Spark Joy is kind of like the sequel to The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up. Only with lots more pictures and it even shows how to go about folding your clothes in the way described in the previous book. It also goes just a little bit more in depth. However, I would say that it really is more about the practical more so than the philosophical, if you are comparing it to its predecessor.

I really did enjoy reading Spark Joy. It ended up influencing me to be a bit more strict on my clothing as well as on my books. In the process of reading, I got read of a few boxes of books and two garbage bags of clothing. I also found myself nagging Josh about getting rid of clothing. And yes, he did listen to my nagging and got rid of some of his own. I think that if you didn’t do the proper KonMari method of getting rid of things – first clothes, then books etc the same way that she recommends but still want to declutter, this will provide the boost of inspiration you need. Also? Just typing about this book has me itching to go back through my things and get rid of even more.

Overall, I would recommend Spark Joy for people who have already read The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up and actually enjoyed it. I would say don’t read this if you want to learn the whole life changing philosophy again. Read this book for a refresher in how to organize your things and in why decluttering and paring down to joyful objects is important.

  1. Thanks for the review! I have The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by her, still haven’t gotten around to reading it, and *looks around room* yep, I still need to get rid of lots of junk! I’ve been on Carousell and have tried selling some things, but there is just lots of stuff! How do you deal with folding clothes? I got tired of folding it her way after a little while… it was more time-consuming and also ended up hurting my back after a while since I have to hunch for longer to fold the clothes! XD Hahah… let me know your own tips! You reckon you’ll end up buying a copy?
