The next great fantasy epic is here! For fans of Ranger's Apprentice and The Chronicles of Narnia. Everyone in Moorvale believes the legend: The brave knight Tristan and the famed wizard Vithric, in an epic battle decades ago, had defeated the evil Nethergrim and his minions. To this day, songs are sung and festivals held in the heroes' honor. Yet now something dark has crept over the village. First animals disappear, their only remains a pile of bones licked clean. Then something worse: children disappear. The whispers begin quietly yet soon turn into a shout: The Nethergrim has returned! Edmund’s brother is one of the missing, and Edmund knows he must do something to save his life. But what? Though a student of magic, he struggles to cast even the simplest spell. Still, he and his friends swallow their fear and set out to battle an ancient evil whose powers none of them can imagine. They will need to come together--and work apart--in ways that will test every ounce of resolve. In a story reminiscent of the Ranger’s Apprentice epic and The Chronicles of Narnia, Matthew Jobin weaves reality, magic, and adventure into the next great fantasy phenomenon. Praise for THE NETHERGRIM

Why Did I Listen To This Book?

You guys want the honest, terrible truth as to why I decided to listen to The Nethergrim by Matthew Jobin narrated by Jeremy Arthur? Well, here goes! I listened to it because it was the last audiobook left in a folder that I downloaded from the publisher (for review do not get illegal ideas into your brains) and I wanted to delete the folder and this is what was holding me back. BUT, initially, I had picked this audiobook to review and listen to because it is my genre kryptonite — middle grade epic fantasy. I love that grandiose huge arcing legends and kids rising up to defeat evil type of stuff, and let me just say that Matthew Jobin delivered on that expectation.

What’s The Story Here?

The Nethergrim by Matthew Jobin opens up with the story of Tristan, who is this knight who travels around. He works for this lord who wants more and more land even though he totally has more than enough land right this second. However, the lord eventually dies, so Tristan is no longer bound to him and if I am remembering correctly, he uses his knight skills to go around helping people. His horse is his number one companion. So, anyways, he ends up going all the way north where the people are plagued by this evil being called the Nethergrim. With the help of a wizard named Vithric, Tristan defeats the Nethergrim. Then we get to the meat of the story. Edmond works at his parents’ tavern and is obsessed with books but his dad thinks books are useless. He also has this crush on his best friend, Katherine, whose dad is a horse trader and also really awesome. The two are friends with Tom who is a slave to this really terrible guy. Anyways, strange things start happening in their neck of the woods and they realize that the Nethergrim is back and so together but also apart they have to overcome the Nethergrim.

How Did I Like The Nethergrim?

GUYS! This book is the real deal. If you like fantasy that is awesome with a really cool legend in the beginning, like a book that makes you think of rising up and defeating evil, this is totally the book for that. It is amazing. Seriously. I LOVED IT. I can’t wait for the sequel. Also? I loved the friendship between Edmond, Katherine, and Tom. I do have to say, I was not that into Edmond’s brother named Joffrey who was a total pain in the ass like another Joffrey that we all definitely know and dislike.

How’s The Narration?

You know how some narrators really get into the story thus riveting you to your earphones? Jeremy Arthur is utterly captivating in his narration of Matthew Jobin’s The Nethergrim. It is kind of like listening to a movie in your ears. He does all of these different voices and it legitimately sounds like a different person doing the voices. It’s great though. I think that his narration really got me into this story and was perfect for making me want to listen to this audiobook while driving and while cleaning and setting up reviews. I am actually really impressed by the production qualities and by the voicing of this audiobook. I actually really recommend it if you have no clue what to listen to next and enjoy epic fantasy.

Sum It Up With A GIF:

Essentially picked this GIF because they are all about defeating the Nethergrim which is this totally evil thing and there’s teamwork involved and it’s just so awesome, like this GIF.

  2. YES I’m so glad someone else I follow has read this! I can’t remember how I found The Nethergrim but I got it at the library when it came out and I was blown away. The story pulled me in right away, I loved the legend and the classic fantasy feel of the book. The friendships were so wonderful and I loved the spirit of darkness and melancholy infused with hope- it reminded me of the first Harry Potter in that regard, and The Demon King a bit. I don’t read a lot of MG but I’m glad I took a chance on this book, more people should read it! I’m anxious for info about the sequel. The book did a good job of wrapping up though; I like books that can stand on their own within a series. And omg your gif is perfect 😀
