On the verge of realizing her dream of being a doctor, Preeti Patel should be ecstatic. But between the stress of her residency, trying to find a job, and managing her traditional, no-boundaries family, Preeti's anxiety is through the roof. Relationships and love aren't even an option. Fortunately, Preeti's finally found a new place to stay . . . only to discover that her new roommate is her ex.
Preeti never quite got over Daniel Thompson. Super-hot, plenty of swagger, amazing cook—the guy is practically perfect. And if it weren't for their families, there might have been a happily ever after. But it's hard to keep her sanity and libido in check when the man of her dreams is sleeping mere feet away. Can Preeti and Daniel find a way to stand up and fight for each other one last time . . . before they lose their second chance?
Why Did I Listen To First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel?
I am such a sucker for the second chance love trope — so of course First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel appealed to me. Then I saw that the audiobook was narrated by Soneela Nankani whose narration style is one that I find appealing. However, I clearly wasn’t paying much attention to the offer for this audiobook because as it turns out, this is the second in a series. I did not go back to see what the first book is about, but just dived right into this one.
What’s The Story Here?
First Love, Take Two follows Preeti Patel who is about to achieve her dream and become a doctor. She is chief resident and waiting on a job offer to come true. She’s stressed because she needs a new place to stay. Luckily her friend comes through and lets Preeti sublet her place. HOWEVER, there’s an unexpected roommate who will also be utilizing the place. That roommate? Preeti’s ex – Daniel. Daniel is the one who got away. As it turns out, the spark is still there between Preeti and Daniel. Unfortunately, their relationship ended for a multitude of reasons and it seems like getting together will be impossible. Also? Preeti is kind of engaged to an Indian man named Yuvan. Oh, and did I mention that Daniel is Black, which plays a big factor in the story.
How Did I Like First Love, Take Two?
Even though I have not read the first book in the series, I really found First Love, Take Two easy to follow along with. I didn’t feel like I was missing any crucial context and thrown in the middle of a series with no means of know what was going on. Preeti came across as a unique romance heroine. She has touch aversion and anxiety. Also, she takes medications for the anxiety. I have to admit, I enjoyed that mental health rep and how it positively portrayed treatment. Additionally, I thought that the interracial relationship between Preeti and Daniel added depth to the story — Preeti’s community judged her because she dated a Black man. Daniel by the way is an absolute treasure. Tall, dark, and handsome — he’s also loaded and has a heart of gold. I was rooting for him and Preeti the whole time. It was also interesting how Daniel’s dad perceived Preeti as not good enough for Daniel because she doesn’t come from a wealthy background — but in my world, doctors are well off and that’s what Preeti is about to be.
I also ran the gamut of emotions while listening to this book. FYI, there is a scene with a patient who has a stillbirth, so be aware if that is a trigger for you. For me, that part was really hard to read. However, it is handled so well. I was so invested in the story and in Preeti and Daniel. OH and Preeti’s parents are wonderful — they were one of my favorite elements of this book.
How’s The Narration?
The audiobook of First Love Take Two is narrated by Soneela Nankani and is 10 hours and 34 minutes long. Initially, I had started this audiobook at 1.5x speed and then went up to 2x. Then, in the middle of listening, I had read an article about slowing down your listening. I thought oh maybe I should slow this one down and see if I retain more. Turns out, I retained so much more from slowing it down. Overall, Nankani is a wonderful narrator and this one is SO good via audio.
