A second chance at love sets sail when a couple on the verge of divorce pretends they’re still together for one last family trip, from the author of Wedding Dashers.
Roslyn and Liam met nine years ago and have been the perfect couple ever since. Through every up and down, every milestone—from Liam’s residency to the publication of Roslyn’s debut romance—they’ve been each other’s rock. Until now.
Pulled apart by the untimely death of Roslyn’s mom and the undertow of grief, they’re now navigating the final wave in their marriage: divorce.
Heartbroken and unsure how to tell her family she’s called it quits with everyone’s favorite son-in-law, Roslyn keeps the impending split to herself. But when Roslyn’s grandparents ask if Liam can officiate their vow renewal ceremony aboard a Hawaiian cruise during their annual vacation, Roslyn needs to tell the truth or figure out a way to keep her secret. A week trapped at sea with her ex isn’t ideal, but neither Roslyn nor Liam want to rock the boat, so they concoct a plan—they’ll fake it.
After five years of marriage, they can figure out how to pretend for jungle hikes and mai tais, right? But when reality and make believe starts to blur, and old feelings begin to resurface, Roslyn and Liam have to decide whether it’s sink or swim for their marriage.
Why Did I Listen To Sunk In Love by Heather McBreen?
Sunk In Love by Heather McBreen was initially on my radar because it’s a romance and I quite enjoy romance books. However, when I was browsing threads, I saw Jenny talk about it and the way she described this book as being quite good for a trope she isn’t always into convinced me to pick this up sooner rather than later. Plus — the narration by Brittany Pressley basically sold me on Sunk In Love.
What’s The Story Here?
Heather McBreen’s Sunk In Love follows Roslyn and Liam. They are a married couple about to no longer be married. However, no one in Roslyn’s family is aware of this. And so, her grandparents are about to renew their vows on a family cruise and would like Liam to officiate. Not wanting to rock the boat, Roslyn begs Liam to pretend things are okay and normal and to please officiate. He agrees and so for a few days, it is like old times. The chemistry is still there between Roslyn and Liam. However, without some change, there’s no way Roslyn will take back the request for a divorce, even if those excursions bring back why they loved each other so much.
How Did I Like Sunk In Love?
I am glad I stumbled upon this recommendation. It turns out that I fully enjoyed my time with Sunk In Love. Roslyn is a compelling character and we get to explore her feelings of inadequacy compared to her family which is comprised of doctors. We also see how deep into the trenches of grief she was. You see, prior to the events of this book, Roslyn’s mother passed unexpectedly in a car accident. Roslyn’s mother was very similar to her, so she is taking it the hardest of her siblings. It also forges an emotional distance from Liam. And so, I appreciated that this wasn’t just light and breezy, but that there was some depth to this. We also learn about Liam’s trauma from when he was growing up in England, that he never shared with Roslyn until the cruise. There’s gravity to these moments and.I felt like that made the levity and the happy parts that much stronger. I was genuinely rooting for this couple.
How’s The Narration?
A large part of my enjoyment of this book can be credited to the narration. As always, Brittany Pressley does a superb job embodying the story and the characters. Her narration is believable and emotional. I knew beforehand I would like the narration and of course, I was right. The audiobook goes quick and is quite compelling to listen to. If you are looking for a way to experience this story, I would put my vote in for the audiobook.
