Why Did I Listen To The Dog Master by W. Bruce Cameron?

The Dog Master by W. Bruce Cameron is 100% out of the ordinary for what I typically read, listen to, and review. I mean, yes, I do listen to historical fiction sometimes. However, I never ever listen to historical fiction set during the dawn of human civilization. I am blanking a bit on what the time era is called, it just does not interest me all that much. The Dog Master, however, absolutely interested me because I am just wild about dogs. Seriously, I think it is a great day when I get to pet a dog.

What’s The Story Here?

So, okay, in full disclosure, I listened to The Dog Master back in October 2016 and it is now March 2017 as I write this and so I am 100% fuzzy on details from this book. Here’s what I remember – the book opens up with a professor in class. He’s assigning his students a subject with that early humanity era. Eventually he goes out to eat in France, I think. And the subject turns to the first dog. From there, the story goes on to follow some tribes during early humanity. There’s the Kindred tribe and one called the Frightened and another called the Cohort. I think there’s a few more. Anyways, there’s a character named Mal who has a physical abnormality. His mom won’t let it be thought of as a curse and fights for him to stay with the tribe. Mal gets cast out though and ends up training these wolf puppies – including one named Dog. There’s also a whole lot of other characters and a parallel storyline going on too.

What Did I Think Of The Dog Master?

So, okay, in all fairness I do not remember literally everything about W. Bruce Cameron’s The Dog Master. I remember specifically Dog, because obviously it has to do with a dog. I remember Mal and how he really does overcome the odds. There’s also the part where intelligence triumphs over strength. There is a little bit of romance. From what I recall, I enjoyed this book. I do not have any lingering strong negative feelings. In fact, I do remember really liking this book and being a fan of the audiobook narration. However, as you can see here, procrastination claims another victim of total recall.

How’s The Narration?

So, from what I remember, the audiobook of The Dog Master is narrated by David Calucci. He’s got a voice that has gravitas. However, he does a fair job narrating different characters at different ages. You can definitely tell the difference between each person in the book based on his voicing. This audiobook is a little bit longer than what I typically listen to — it is nearly 17 hours. However, it’s worth a listen. I really enjoyed it and I have no regrets about borrowing this audiobook from the library.
