Why Did I Listen To Crash by Nicole Williams?

Crash by Nicole Williams is the first in a trilogy that has been sitting on my bookshelves forever. As you may or may not know, I am prioritizing reading books on my shelves and getting them off my shelves and into the donate bin this year. As is nearly always the case, Crash was available via Hoopla at the library and the audiobook was narrated by someone I like. Plus? I wanted to listen to something that was totally different from the books I was physically reading. So, as I’m physically reading some fantasy books, I thought that Crash would be the total opposite.

What’s The Story Here?

So, Crash has one doozy of a plotline. Okay, so this girl Lucy has moved to a beach house basically with her family. She’s no longer going to an elite prep school because her family isn’t as well off anymore. This year, her senior year, she will be starting at a new school. Lucy ends up going to the beach with this ugly dog because she likes to foster and get dogs adopted in her spare time. She comes across this guy named Jude. He’s super good looking but also has a reputation for being kind of dangerous. Anyways, the two have this fierce attraction and sort of a Romeo and Juliet type relationship. And this book, Crash, is basically the story of the two with lots of action and drama from beginning to end.

How’s The Romance?

Hah, well, a healthy relationship this is probably not. Jude and Lucy do have physical chemistry for sure. Lucy wants to do the deed with Jude but things just keep putting that off. They also seem to fight a lot. Jude tries to resist Lucy and warn her off by letting her know about his rap sheet. She doesn’t care though, because of course she doesn’t. Anyways, there’s moments where there’s not really any trust or communication between the two which leads to some major drama and a break up. I’ll just say that they are on again and off again like a light bulb. If you like gossipy, dramatic relationships, Crash will be in your wheelhouse.

How’s The Writing?

Well, okay, I will say that I felt like the plot of Crash was pretty far fetched. I know that sometimes that’s par for the course with new adult books. Still, there were a few eye roll moments. Especially toward the end when we discover Jude’s connection to Lucy’s family and there’s a big reveal. Also, this may sound odd, but at the end there’s a character who goes to Syracuse which is where I live and another who goes to New York City and it makes it seem as though it’s just a quick drive between the two. And this is inaccurate and it really bothered me a lot because it’s basically four hours from Syracuse to New York City and you wouldn’t just go to a party from New York City to Syracuse on a whim.

How’s The Narration?

So, the narration is by Cassandra Campbell. She’s narrated plenty of audiobooks that I’ve listened to. I’ve got no issues with her narration. I think her voice works particularly well for new adult and is believable. The choice of Campbell as narrator for Crash by Nicole Williams works really well. In all, this is one that I think is good to listen to via audiobook. I have absolutely no complaints about the audio production.

Well, I think she’s 17, but the same sentiment basically. And as an adult looking at this, yes, yes, you are a child.
