Why Did I Listen To Facade by Nyrae Dawn?

Facade by Nyrae Dawn is a book that I grabbed off of Netgalley when I was going through a New Adult reading phase. Do not get me twisted, I still really enjoy reading New Adult books. However, I just am not reading them quite as much now as I did then. I don’t even remember the exact reason I grabbed Facade, I think it was due to a blogger friend being really into Nyrae Dawn’s work. Lucky for me, the library via Hoopla had an audiobook of Facade available and so I made progress in FINALLY listening to this book even though it’s been on my Kindle since likely 2013.

What’s The Story Here?

Facade is a book that alternates points of view chapters between Delaney and Adrian. Delaney is a girl whose family was essentially ruined when her father hit a child with his car while hooking up with this woman that he had an affair with. Adrian is a total charmer type, however, his life seems to be stuck ever since the tragedy when Ash, his nephew, was hit by a car. Delaney finds herself meeting the family of Ash, first, his mother, to find forgiveness. She then meets Adrian while working as a waitress but does not reveal her connection to him. Anyways, she gets through Adrian’s bad boy exterior to the person he is inside. Yet, she is still holding tightly to her secret and to her connection despite finding herself falling for Adrian.

How’s The Characterization?

Both of the main characters in Facade were broken and leading lives that seemed stunted. To me, these characters are New Adult age but they are so mired in trauma that they do not move forward with their lives and try to achieve success. Adrian essentially does handyman work and has this awful family history – his father was very abusive. Delaney works as a waitress and lives with her brother in a one bedroom apartment. Neither has gone to college, that I can recall, or seems all that interested in working jobs that are not dead end. Delaney has a terrible relationship with her mother. On the upside, both have supportive relationships with their siblings. Anyways, so both main characters are really characterized as broken people who are in need of healing, which is kind of interesting, but at points I did find myself tuning out as it felt repetitive.

How’s The Writing?

To be completely honest with you, I thought that the writing was a little bit melodramatic. I get it. Both characters have tragic pasts, and now they are hooking up and just super into each other and there are big twists and reveals. It just felt like it was a little bit much though.

What Did I Think Of The Narration?

Facade is narrated by Sophie Eastlake and Jesse Bernstein. The narrators take on alternating chapters as Adrian and Delaney. I thought they did reasonably well, given the material. This audiobook does go by quick, which I appreciated. I have actually no complaints at all about the audio production.

Who Would I Recommend Facade To?

Sum It Up With A GIF:

Every time Adrian had a chapter, all I could hear was ADRIANNNNNNNN. I am a terrible person.

  1. That GIF of Rocky soooo cracked me up. I think I’m gonna pass on this one. But yay for Hoopla! So glad you’re enjoying the audiobooks. I was just listening to Something Like You by Julie James via Hoopla and it was AMAZING! I think you would get a kick out of these audiobooks. Adult contemporary romance, and there is so much banter. And the women in the books are awesome at their jobs.
