Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle | Book Review

I’ll admit, my weakness is celebrities. By now, you guys should know that I really just love reading celebrity memoirs. I love the nitty gritty gossip. I do not even care what you think about my penchant for curling up with a tell all, judge away reader friends, judge away. So, when I first encountered Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle, it was at a BEA Publishing event hosted by Little Brown. These ladies pitched it as this sort of sexy love triangle that involves a girl who becomes a famous actress and that part of the marketing included an additional release of an in-world book called Locked before publication. I was hooked. Of course, I am also a person who lives in an apartment that will eventually collapse due to an abundance of books. So, I did not read Famous In Love until a year later, when I committed to a blog tour for Truly Madly Famously. I have got to tell you guys, I’ve been reading books in series back to back to back and it is actually one of the better things to happen in my reading life. Famous In Love is from my second run of reading books in series.

Famous In Love opens up with Serle’s main character Paige, living out life in Portland with her two best friends Cassie and Jake. She goes to Powell’s and reads all of the scripts in a comfy reading spot. Paige is so passionate about acting, it is the one thing she does best. One day, her best friend Cassandra shows up with a flyer for an open casting call for upcoming movie adaptation of Locked. Locked is a film about a girl who ends up on a desert island after a plane crash with her boyfriend’s best friend, Noah. The girl’s named is August, and she finds that she is falling for Noah. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Ed, is also still alive and well, she also still has feelings for him. The series is on the level of Twilight popularity in Serle’s fictional version of our world. Paige lands the role and her life changes drastically as she flies to Hawaii for shooting. There she meets co-stars Rainer and Jordan whom she feels attraction towards. FYI, Rainer and Jordan had a falling out in the past and so things are tense between all three major cast members. And that, in a nutshell, is the plot of Famous In Love by Rebecca Serle.

Paige Townsen makes for a relatable and compelling protagonist. We read about her meteoric rise to stardom and how she is a bit naive about the industry. Yet, at the same time, she tries her best to maintain her friendships with Jake and Cassandra. It’s hard though because they are leading average, normal teenage lives in Portland and she is living it up in Hawaii. I love that she is so passionate about acting – to the point of making it her career. It is a hard industry, and no bones are made about that in this book. I love that Paige has this strong work ethic too. Her job is not easy but she always gives it her best and her all. She may not be a big reader or an academic, but she’s got a kind heart and well, I admired and related to that part of her personality. Also? Her family is large, she is one of four kids, and they play a bit of a role in shaping her that I like. I’ll say that Paige is quite independent and sufficient and not a wilting violet, even though she’s got her moments of self doubt like any other person.

You will probably not enjoy Famous In Love if you are not a fan of love triangles. The love triangle in this book is twofold. First, there’s the real life triangle between Paige and Rainer and Jordan. Then there’s the fictional meta love triangle between August and Noah and Ed. I, however, liked Paige’s waffling. I mean, both guys have different things going for them. Rainer is a good guy with a bit of family issues pertaining to his dad. He’s nice and goofy and fun. Jordan is someone that has this immense physical chemistry with Paige. Also? Paige can’t stop thinking about him. However, he has a reputation for being a bad boy and a womanizer and he does not get along with Rainer. Paige has a tough decision to make between the two – Rainer or Jordan. I won’t tell you who she picks but it certainly makes for dramatic, cannot set the book down reading. Also? There are lots of kisses, both for being on screen and also happening off screen. It is THE BEST. If you’re all about those scenes and I totally am all about that noise.
