The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle | Audiobook Review

Why Did I Listen To This Book?

I decided on listening to The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle because I figured it would be one of those books where I wouldn’t have to invest all my time as far as audiobooks go and that it would be one that would be easy for me to set down. Really, I just kind of randomly picked this one because I didn’t want to pick a book that I would end up devouring in a few days because LOL I did not want to add another audiobook to my super high need to be reviewed stack and well, you guys should know that I do feel a compulsion to review my audiobooks. For the most part, this was an okay audiobook with a few technical issues. The stories were good though and actually went faster than I had expected. ALSO! I have been curious about this Sherlock fellow for awhile and my appetite had previously been whetted by listening to an audio of The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle last year.

What’s The Story Here?

There’s twelve different Sherlock Stories in this audiobook — including The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle and I totally listened to that one again instead of skipping the chapter. So, okay the best story to me was the one about the red headed league. I am not sure if the intention was to be funny or not, but this guy sees an ad in the paper inviting people with red hair of a certain shade to apply for this job, so he applies and gets it and is paid a certain amount of pounds per week to just hang out in this one office for a couple hours. One day though, he shows up to work and finds that the office is all closed up and there’s no record of his boss or anything, so Holmes is on the job along with Watson. I thought the idea was kind of silly and funny and a nice distraction. There’s also the story of a girl who has this fiance who just disappears and all she has left of him is a letter. Her fiance and her stepfather are never in the same room at the same time, if you get my drift. There’s other mysteries too, but those are the ones that really stick in my mind.

Did It Live Up To My Expectations?

My expectations weren’t super high. I mean, I read The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle as a distraction book and it certainly did help to distract. I liked the different short stories and how tightly focused they were. I liked how Sherlock came to the answers that solve each case. My brain definitely does not work the same way.

How Was The Narration?

Simon Prebble is alright as a narrator. I mean, he’s not my favorite because the narration is so serious and deep and formal sounding. I don’t know. I always end up zoning out when I listen to his narrations, but that’s just a personal April thing, not a narrator thing. As for the audiobook, I am not sure if it’s me, the book or the app, but on a few occasions, some of the tracks repeated themselves as in Chapter 5 was the same exact track as Chapter 4, which ugh, is annoying but that could be an issue that is not the audiobook itself’s fault.
