ABOUT LIKE A RIVER GLORIOUS:

After a harrowing journey across the country, Leah Westfall and her friends have finally arrived in California and are ready to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Lee has a special advantage over the other new arrivals in California—she has the ability to sense gold, a secret known only by her handsome best friend Jefferson and her murdering uncle Hiram.

Lee and her friends have the chance to be the most prosperous settlers in California, but Hiram hasn’t given up trying to control Lee and her power. Sabotage and kidnapping are the least of what he’ll do to make sure Lee is his own. His mine is the deepest and darkest in the territory, and there Lee learns the full extent of her magical gift, the worst of her uncle, and the true strength of her friendships. To save everyone, she vows to destroy her uncle and the empire he is building—even at the cost of her own freedom.

The second epic historical fantasy in the Gold Seer trilogy by Rae Carson, the acclaimed author of The Girl of Fire and Thorns.

My Thoughts on Like A River Glorious by Rae Carson thus far:

I feel like at this stage I would probably be a professional Rae Carson fan girl if I did not have an actual job. If only, am I right? Anyways, I feel like I have been anticipating Like A River Glorious for FOREVER. Actually, since my flight home from Cabo when I read Walk On Earth A Stranger. Of course, like a total failure, I have yet to finish reading this book. You ever see that meme about a kid acting like a brat, knowing they are acting like a brat but are in too deep to stop now? That’s how I felt with this prior book I was reading before where it wasn’t the best but I was in too deep and I couldn’t stop it to read this one.

I clearly made the wrong choice. I am finding Like A River Glorious to be so captivating so far. AND HEARTBREAKING. Oh my goodness though, I love it. So, basically this book picks up in California. Leah Westfall and her rag tag group are staking their claims to mine some gold. There’s dangers and new characters. But there’s also development of some of the lesser characters. I am thinking of Becky Joyner. I love what I am reading of her character so far. However, I am only on page 113.

One thing that’s great is that this is a book that actually does keep your attention. I do not feel dread or bored while I’m reading it. Instead, I can’t wait to dive back in when I have a break here and there. I almost wish that I had an audiobook too so I could read while driving (which happens to be the longest stretch I get of reading most days). My assessment so far is that based on these 113 pages, I am not disappointed and I don’t think I will end up disappointed either. In fact, I think I am going to end up on pins and needles for the final book of the trilogy.

ABOUT RAE CARSON:

I write books about teens who must do brave things. I’m originally from California, but I now live in Arizona with my husband, who is the smartest and therefore sexiest man I know. My books tend to contain lots of adventure, a little magic and romance, and smart girls who make (mostly) smart choices. I especially love to write about questions I don’t know the answers to.
