Three Truths And A Lie by Brent Hartinger is absolutely an unexpected book. I mean, I had accepted the Netgalley eARC for review on the premise that there would be lies and murder. Certain parts are hard to see coming. I will leave it at that. Readers, this is the book for you if you want a book that has teenagers who are gay doing things besides coming out. Brent Hartinger has written quite the thriller.
Three Truths And A Lie opens up with the characters Rob, Liam, Mia and Galen getting matching spiderweb tattoos on their inner wrists. Only, some shady guys show up at the parlor looking for Galen. The teens all run away before Rob can get his matching tattoo. From there, they all end up going to this secluded cabin out in the woods owned by Mia’s family. The cabin has no running water or electricity. The teens begin to play three truths and a lie. It turns out though, that someone among the teens is a liar and they begin to die one by one.
The main character is Rob. Rob sort of does not fit with Mia and Galen. He basically agrees to go on the trip because he wants to be closer to his boyfriend Liam’s friends. Liam is best friends with Mia. Mia dates Galen. Rob just does not get it. Three Truths And A Lie is narrated by Rob, and well, honestly, it isn’t hard to root for Rob. He’s definitely the one you want to make it out alive while reading.
The other three main characters as mentioned before are Liam, Mia, and Galen. Liam is Rob’s boyfriend and as such, the two are pretty adorable together. Mia is Liam’s best friend. There is some tension between Rob and Mia. Rob isn’t so sure he really likes Mia and does find her sort of annoying. Galen, Mia’s boyfriend, manages to really rub Liam the wrong way. It’s interesting how this group of teenagers has a whole lot of in-fighting and drama.
Three Truths And A Lie by Brent Hartinger is a chilling young adult horror story. It’s absolutely a thriller and one of those great fall sort of reads. I think if there is any kind of Halloween related marathon or reading going down, this would be the book to grab.You’ll like this book if you enjoyed I Know What You Did Last Summer, parts are super similar. The ending is one that I actually did not see coming but did really like. In all, this is a book that I probably won’t remember for the rest of my life, but one I enjoyed my time with.
