Contemporary teen fiction with romance, secrets, scandals, and ESP from the author of Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn't Have). We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper. Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same. So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.

Why Did I Listen To This Book?

Don’t Even Think About It by Sarah Mlynowski basically appealed to me because of the cover. The cover is pink with girls who look kind of rebellious with their sunglasses and as someone who always is wearing sunglasses, I could not resist putting this audiobook on my iPhone. Beyond this, I figured that Don’t Even Think About It would be a fun and light read that wouldn’t require a whole lot out of me. Sometimes you just need an easy listen audiobook and this was the one for me.

What’s The Story Here?

Okay, so basically what happens is that Don’t Even Think About It contains several main characters. From what I remember back when I read this book in June, there was not like one main narrator, but that all the main kids were narrator, I mean the narrator was omnipresent, using terms like ‘little did we know’ etc. The basis of this story is that one class in a New York City school goes to get flu shots from the school nurse. Unfortunately, the flu shots are tainted with something that slowly but surely gives the students in this homeroom class mind reading powers and so, Don’t Even Think About It is about what happens when the students can’t lie to each other and when all their secrets become kind of public knowledge. This book is actually really, really funny. A few of the students will do anything to keep their secrets from spilling out — including Mackenzie who has cheated on her boyfriend and well, now the students who can read minds know. Then there’s Tess who has a crush on her best friend. There’s also Olivia who is super shy and really self conscious. Also, a character named BJ who is not as terrible as he first seems, thank goodness.

How Is The World Building?

As far as world building goes, it’s not like this is a fantasy book with a super intricate world, however Mlynowski does have to make the mind reading make sense as well as the reaction to having that power. I loved what she did with mind reading. I thought it was so funny — especially when the students find out their school nurse’s secret, ha ha. Also, I liked that the students found a way to deal with the mind reading, like when they wanted to guard their thoughts. It was cool seeing how that developed.

How Is The Narration?

I liked Erin Spencer’s take on the story. Her voice is pleasant. She has good comedic timing. I mean, yes she’s reading someone else’s words, but how she reads them matters and timing matters. I thought she did a great job with Don’t Even Think About It. I think that if she came back to read the sequel, I would totally listen to that on audiobook. Honestly, this was an awesome listen. Granted, this book is not the greatest book of all time, it is a good listen for people who just want a palate cleanser and to listen to something that’s not that serious.

Sum It Up With A GIF:

Clearly, if people could read my thoughts I would be just like Mad Eye Moody.

  1. I listened to Don’t Even Think About It, and I liked it, too. Like you said, it’s not the best book ever written, but it was pleasant, and it wasn’t a huge time commitment. I’m glad you liked it.

  2. For me, Don’t Even Think About It was a decent read! I think it would have been much more fun to listen to it on audio or to even see it played out as a TV show episode or film.
