In the town of Placid, Wisconsin, in 1871, Georgie Burkhardt is known for two things: her uncanny aim with a rifle and her habit of speaking her mind plainly.

But when Georgie blurts out something she shouldn't, her older sister Agatha flees, running off with a pack of "pigeoners" trailing the passenger pigeon migration. And when the sheriff returns to town with an unidentifiable body—wearing Agatha's blue-green ball gown—everyone assumes the worst. Except Georgie. Refusing to believe the facts that are laid down (and coffined) before her, Georgie sets out on a journey to find her sister. She will track every last clue and shred of evidence to bring Agatha home. Yet even with resolute determination and her trusty Springfield single-shot, Georgie is not prepared for what she faces on the western frontier.

Why Did I Listen To This Book?

I decided to listen to Amy Timberlake’s One Came Home because I have a very soft spot for middle grade historical fiction books. I listened to a sample of the narration and was hooked. The narration sample was rather pleasing on my ears so I figured, yes, this is a book that I think I will enjoy in audio. Turns out, I was totally right on the money with that instinct. Also? The main character is totally my type – young, tough as nails, and a crack shot.

What’s The Story Here?

One Came Home by Amy Timberlake is about this young girl named Georgie Burkhardt who lives with her grandfather, mother, and sister, Agatha in Placid, Wisconsin during the 1800s. Georgie’s sister Agatha leaves home which normally would be fine. However, one day a sheriff shows up at Georgie’s house saying that they found an unidentified female body wearing Agatha’s dress. Everyone assumes it is Agatha who has died. Except for Georgie, that is. And so, Georgie leaves home to get to the bottom of the mystery and to hopefully find out what happened to her sister, Agatha. Joining her is Agatha’s childhood beau, Billy.

How Are The Characters?

I quite liked Georgie. I loved that she was so determined. I loved that she refused to give up and stuck to her instincts and her guns, so to speak. It’s been a few months since I listened to this book, yet I still feel fond when I think about my listening and reading experience and about Georgie. She’s a great main character is all I am saying. As for Agatha, we learn about her through Georgie’s recollections and about how she was very devoted to her studies, but this is a time when women get married, so it’s not like she totally has the option of going to college. Also, Agatha is very, very pretty. Hmmm, oh yes and Billy plays a pretty important role and ended up winning me over.

How’s The Narration?

I think that One Came Home by Amy Timberlake is my first experience with Tara Sands as a narrator. I have to tell you all that I really enjoyed the experience. Tara Sands puts on a great accent for the book. Her voice is youthful but manages to carry the story. I never felt my attention wandering while listening. If you want an entertain listen that’s relatively short, I would recommend One Came Home.

Who Would I Recommend This Book To?

  • Historical fiction fans
  • People who want to know more about mid-1800s Wisconsin
  • People who like westerns that have zero to do with cowboys and Indians
  • Those looking to wade into middle grade fiction

Sum It Up With A GIF:

Pretty much that’s the main character, Georgie, in a nutshell.
