Loud Awake And Lost by Adele Griffin | Good Books And Good Wine

Loud Awake And Lost opens with seventeen year old Ember Leferrier coming home from intensive therapy at the hospital. You see, she was in a horrific car accident that was thisclose to killing her. She had to spend months in physical therapy as well as therapy for her mental health state. You see, Ember has amnesia surrounding the time leading up to her accident. She can’t remember what happened. When she comes home, she is surrounded by friends and family who really care about her and want to help her become the Ember they remember. However, Ember realizes that she was very, very different in the time leading up to the accident — she was not the good girl everyone remembers. When a chance meeting with a boy named Kai occurs, Ember begins to make some revelations about the accident. Will everything come together? You will have to read Griffin’s Loud Awake And Lost to find out.

When I first opened Loud Awake And Lost, I thought Ember was kind of boring. I was not connecting to her character in the way that I had hoped. Yet, as the book went on she ended up winning me over. There is just something about her character that  I could empathize with. I think it was her search for answers even though it would cause her mental anguish that did me in. I admire a dogged determination for truth. Also, Ember has interesting traits like being a former dancer and having it affect the way she moves. It was interesting to read about her mental state after learning she would never be a dancer again. I also liked how much she loved cooking and how she put her self and her passion into her food — actually having fun with it. And, also, how the accident affected her passion for the cooking.

I think where this book really shines is in how Adele Griffin portrays the different relationships Ember has. Whether the relationship is with her best friend Rachel who is bossy and domineering and also one with a big huge heart full of care and compassion or the relationship with Holden, Rachel’s cousin and Ember’s ex-boyfriend. The book shows just how complicated and complex basic relationships can be, especially when you have lost six weeks of your life. Not to mention Kai, this guy whom Ember has an inexplicable connection to. Furthermore, there is Ember’s relationship with Birdie, her dance instructor and mentor. I just, I really loved how Loud Awake And Lost detailed all of these interactions in a way that completely pulled me in and had me glued to the page.

Griffin does a bang up job with her latest book. I was invested in Ember and her recovery of memory. When everything came together, I might have gasped. I would absolutely recommend this book to people who read for character interaction and for books that give you the “feels”. Griffin’s writing is smart and on point. I highly, highly recommend this book and definitely would give it my seal of approval.

  1. Great review! I’m not familiar with this author…what’s your favorite book of hers?

  2. Okay you totally sold me with your review. While the overall situation may not have piqued my interest, you totally made me want to get to know the characters. I tend to love hard-hitting, character-driven stories. Have added this to my Kindle. Hope to get the chance to read it soon and see if it takes me awhile to warm up to Ember, too. Great review.
