Being Sloane Jacobs | Lauren Morrill | Audiobook Review

Why Did I Listen To This Book?

With all of the options I had for reading Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill – ebook, physical ARC, and audiobook – I just knew that I would have to pick the audiobook for my form of reading. There’s something about a busy schedule and FINALLY being able to listen to books out of freewill instead of because of secret project that had me ALL over Being Sloane Jacobs. Friends, I listened to this book in about two days. That’s right — I listened to 9 hours and 14 minutes in two days. I am so pumped and excited about that, and I hope it tells you just how awesome the audiobook is, but if it doesn’t, you will see because I am totally going to go way more in depth.

What’s The Story Here?

There are multiple comparisons of Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill and The Parent Trap as well as The Cutting Edge. I am going to tell you right now, those comparisons are actually really accurate. The book opens with two girls, both named Sloane Jacobs, on their way to Canada for camp. One girl, Sloane Emily, is the daughter of a US Senator, and is going to figure skating camp after a few years out the game when she totally bombed the junior nationals competition. The other girl, Sloane Devon, from Philadelphia, is going to hockey camp after starting a fight during a game as an alternative for being benched for the next few games next season. The two girls meet by chance and end up switching places, just like in The Parent Trap. Both girls think that it will be cake, taking on the other girl’s sport, however they find out it’s not so easy. In fact, both sports demand a high level of athleticism. At the camps, the switch is easy at first, but both girls run into roommate problems, sport problems, and boy problems. Also? Their home lives are not perfect. Sloane Emily has witnessed her dad in a compromising position with someone other than her mother. Sloane Devon’s mom is in rehab. Yet, the two girls navigate their new situations with pluck, neither one cowed by their problems and opposition.

How Is The Characterization?

Where Morrill really excels is in her characterization. For two girls that share the same first and last name, Sloane Emily and Sloane Devon could not be more different. Granted, they are both good on ice skates, have similar builds, and dark hair, that is where the similarities end. Sloane Emily is really girly. She is well off financially. She is the sort of character who I thought seemed a bit shy. However, she’s tougher than we think and she really takes on the challenge of playing hockey. As for Sloane Devon, she has a bit of an anger problem. She’s not quite as graceful as Sloane Emily. She doesn’t take conflict lying down. Actually, one other thing the girls have in common is being awesome at pranks. OH, and being characters that I really enjoyed getting to know and rooted for. I can’t decide which Sloane I liked better, all I can say is that they were equally engrossing to read about.

Was There Romance?

If you read young adult contemporary books and find romance to be a nice little bonus, you certainly will not be disappointed in Being Sloane Jacobs. Both Sloanes get their own whirlwind Canadian romance. Sloane Emily’s love interest is a hockey player named Matt who has a bit of a reputation. Will she be able to look past his reputation? Well, you will just have to read the book and find out. As for Sloane Devon, her love interest is a blast from the past and another hockey player called Nando, whom she used to play with back in the peewee co-ed hockey days. They randomly reconnect and sparks fly. If you like sweet romances that are not very explicit, you will really, really enjoy Being Sloane Jacobs.

How Is The Narration?

Clearly, you know by now that the narration in Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill must not have been all that terrible given that I have listened to the audiobook in a pretty much marathon session over two days. As I said above, the book is 9 hours and 14 minutes long. It is produced by Listening Library. The two narrators are Shelby Lewis and Devon Sorvari. I honestly could not think of two more perfect narrators. Each one makes her Sloane Jacobs unique and individual. The one who plays Sloane Devon pretty much sounds exactly like one of my book blogger friends, it was uncanny, and also made the listening experience pleasant. The narrators put on accents, used different character voices and let emotion creep into their voices. This is the book to listen to if you are in desperate need of a contemporary young adult book to lighten your dreary winter day. I highly, highly, highly, like triple highly, recommend Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill.

  1. I loved the (original) Parent Trap as a kid and after reading Lauren’s “Meant To Be” and your summary of this title, I have no doubt that this will be a sweet & fun read.

    Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

  2. I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while now but then it fell off my radar. After reading your review, it’s back on my radar and so are audiobooks. I’m an audiobook virgin but hmmm, I think it would be an interesting way to spend my 20 minute commute to work.

    Thanks for the review.

  3. The sweet Mighty Ducks GIF is reason enough for me to read this book. You rock! And so does this book. That is all. 🙂

  4. I got an arc of this, too, and loved it as well. Great gif and review.

  5. I definitely enjoyed this one! I thought it was really cute, and that Lauren did a great job characterizing the two Sloanes so that they were each easy to identify and follow (story-wise). This is seriously the perfect book to become a Disney Channel Original movie, no lie.

  6. Love the GIF choice-this was a fun read and I loved getting to meet both Sloane Jacobs and follow their crazy implausible adventures!

  7. So here I was, searching through my audible wishlist to use my last credit this month. I’m currently listening to The Scorpio Races. Which is kinda crazy intense right now, so I’m looking for something light and fun. When scrolling goodreads to see what all my friends thought I saw that you reviewed the audio book version.

You have convinced me, this will be my next listen!! 🙂 I kinda love The Parent Trap and The Cutting edge so if it’s anything like those I will probably enjoy it. 🙂 I like that it has duel narrators! I can’t wait to start this one.

Oh and before I started The Scorpio Races, I listened to the Audio of Maybe One Day. I loved your review of it, and when I saw it was on there I had to have it. It was so good. 🙂

    lol at that gif.

    Have a great weekend!
