A Bottle Of Wine & A Movie: Say Anything (1989)

I enjoy things that are not books with my wine. One such thing is MOVIES and so because I miss talking about films and watching them, I’ve decide to devote some space to movies. Deal with it. The very first inaugural movie is one of my top five movies of all time. I love this movie with all my heart, so haters to the left. That movie? Say Anything  from 1989. ALWAYS AND FOREVER.

Say Anything movie cover

Basically, it’s a one hour and forty minute long movie about a boy and a girl who fall in love after graduating high school.  Uncork your bottles, we are about to go back to a simpler time and watch Say Anything.

  • Diane Court is actually kind of awkward, come to think of it.
  • But oh my goodness so beautiful, I cannot.
  • AND YOU GUYS LLYOD HAS LOVE FOR HER. Well, a big crush at least, and I love that.

  • At the graduation ceremony, when Joe sings, I can’t help but imagine my graduation and how that would never ever happen. Y’all, the 80s as presented by movies were so cool.
  • Awww, you guys, remember when there were house phones and your parents answered the phone and were weird to your friends and to your romantic interests.
  • Lloyd has word vomit when he is nervous too — I love his little speech about kickboxing.
  • Is it a requirement that every teenage movie have a stair scene where the girl comes down for her date and is all look at how beautiful I am?
  • That dress, though.

  • Also? Why are all the parties in these movies so awesome and huge? No one in my town had a house as massive as the house in this movie.
  • LOL, that girl obsessed with Joe and signing all her emo songs about him.
  • I love that the guidance counselor shows up to give Lloyd career counseling. I don’t know about you all, but at 18 I thought I wanted to be a therapist. This is not what I ended up studying in college, nor is it what I do now.
  • HE LIKES GIRLS WITH NAMES LIKE ASHLEY. hahahah forever LOL.

  • I would like a person in my life named Rooster to throw parties for momentous events in my life.
  • Don’t you just hate that out of control drunk person that you inevitably end up babysitting? Learn to hold your alcohol, bro. Also, I am throwing stones at glass houses.
  • Oh, Lloyd, wanting to hear Diane’s divorce story, you are the cutest. STOP IT NOW.
  • The first time I saw this movie and they get to the scene where Lloyd is in her room looking at her books and he opens her dictionary with the words that she underlined and like every word is underlined, I always thought that was the coolest quirk. I am also weird.
  • Listen grownups, you need to stop pressuring Lloyd about his future. Cut it out.
  • Elderly people just do not give a shit. I love it. I love the old lady who tells Lloyd he is too tall.

  • MAKEOUT MONTAGE. LEADING TO SEXYTIMES. Basically my favorite part of the movie and why In Your Eyes will always be on my iPod and my iPhone always. You guys, never has doing that in car been so appealing. AND THE ARE YOU SHAKING. NO. YOU’RE SHAKING. Oh my god. Excuse me my ovaries are exploding.

  • The moment when she confesses to spending the night with Lloyd to her dad and is all, I have to tell you because otherwise it doesn’t feel real, I am like, oh gross. Your dad does not need to know about your sex life.
  • “But what you’ll really be thinking is WE HAD SEX” hahahaha
  • I know I am getting old because when they are driving and she is breaking up with him, he keeps looking at her and not the road and I am like you kids need to pay attention to the road.
  • “I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen”. yeah, Diane Court you are a dick.

  • Did people actually used to record tapes for each other like, of them monologuing?
  • My favorite part of this movie is: “Bitches, man.” I will always forever laugh my head off.
  • Okay, I know people like to justifying hating this movie because of the boom box scene, but personally I will always love it. Lloyd is just so sad and serious and Diane is trying to sleep but terrible at it and there is so much feeling and anxiety and this will forever be known as the moment I hated Tony for not serenading me with a boom box.

  • Normally I find 80s fashion to be kind of questionable, but I just want Diane Court’s closet. Her outfits are flawless and classy and timeless.
  • When she finds the cash in the box, I kind of want her to MAKE IT RAIN.
  • OH YES NOW THEY ARE BACK TOGETHER AND IT IS LOVE AND KISSING AND ALL THE EMOTIONS YOU GUYS.
  • Diane and Lloyd spooning on the tiny bed, it’s cute, but then I am like, isn’t that uncomfortable.

  • And then when Lloyd visits Diane’s dad in the lock up and gives him the letter and is all knowing a version that says I just can’t help loving you exists has got to be a good thing. AND THEN DIANE SHOWS UP. AND GIVES HER DAD A PEN, ahahahaha.
  • THEN THE END OF THE MOVIE — lol remember when you could smoke on planes? And Lloyd is all when the no smoking light goes on we are safe. AND THEN DING THE END.
  • I actually kind of don’t love the ending, but whatever this movie, forever.

  1. AHHHHHHH!!!! I love everything about Say Anything so, so much! My husband and rewatched it over winter break (reason #5,000 he’s a keeper: he suggested watching it) and it just kills me every time. Lloyd’s kickboxing “sport of the future” speech is just perfection and so is the make out in the car scene and, like, every other scene too.

And because I am old enough to remember the 80s, people really did make tapes for each other, which is actually kind of weird thing to do now that I think about it, but it was totally a thing.

People hate the boom box scene?! This is very upsetting news.

  2. It really is too bad more guys can’t be like Lloyd. Such a *good* guy…something far too few high school girls appreciate. Love this movie! *walks away singing “In Your Eyes”*

  3. I cannot understand hating this movie for the boombox scene. It is one of my favorite cinematic moments EVER IN LIFE. You win an award today for putting this up here. It honest to goodness has made my day. Like, really.

  4. One of the great movie moments in the 1980s for sure. Thanks for the flashback…

  5. I love this movie. I need to watch it again.

  6. I like wine. I love movies. So yeah. You definitely need to do this WAY more often!

  7. Here’s my question: WHY aren’t movies made like an 80s movie anymore? Some of my favorite movies are 80s movies, and I’m not even from the 80s. Well, okay, when I say this I mean Breakfast Club, Say Anything, Sixteen Candles, etc etc.

Honestly, I need to watch this movie again. “She gave me a pen”!!!! Broken heart, for sure.
