Don’t Look Now | Michelle Gagnon | Book Review

You know how certain things can motivate you to get the job done more than others? Receiving an email and two copies of Don’t Look Now by Michelle Gagnon motivated me to read it sooner. I know, most people don’t kowtow to pressure, but I totally do. Also, I figure given the cornucopia of Don’t Turn Around copies that I received last year, I might as well read and review Don’t Look Now early so that I don’t feel that year-round guilt. It seems that there’s this trend with me, where when I feel the pressure to read a sequel, I kind of end up liking the sequel better than the first book. This happened with me and Don’t Look Now as well. I guess now that I am not trying to figure out what the heck is going on, why the characters are acting the way they are and what the conspiracy is, I can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Don’t Look Now picks up exactly where Don’t Turn Around leaves off. Noa is in Oakland running a gang of street kids. Basically, she helps keep the kids safe from being kidnapped and experimented on. ALSO! She is way awesome and runs raids on the company that experimented on her. Peter is still in Boston, desperately searching for answers to the PEMA problem by hacking into computers. He finds himself missing Noa, but getting deeper and deeper into the conspiracy. Two other characters get point of views, BUT I don’t want to spoil any of that for you. In Don’t Look Now, the characters find themselves working very, very hard to bring down the company that experimented on Noa and to find answers and a potential cure for PEMA.

Noa continues to be my favorite. In Don’t Look Now, she’s seen as a hero and given hero worship status. This weighs on Noa as she’s just a girl. Yet, I liked seeing her take on the reigns of leadership and seeing her help kids. Also, she’s still totally kickass. I found that I liked her more in this book because I just tend to like when characters take on the mantle of leadership. As for Peter, he tries hard and you can tell. You can tell that so much is weighing on him and that he is having a hard time. You can also sort of see where the endgame is going in regard to Peter and Noa. Anyways, Peter’s dedication to his friends and to unraveling the conspiracy is mad cool. As a reader, I was like yeah I don’t dislike this kid.

Here’s the thing, you are not going to get the answers to the universe or have any super deep and meaningful revelations while reading Don’t Look Now. It’s not exactly an intellectual heavyweight of a book. However, it is exciting and is full of awesome computer hacking and interesting situations. Basically, this is totally one of those beach reads sort of books. It’s something that’s quick and fun and won’t weigh you down with sad feelings. I had fun reading Don’t Look Now and will definitely be back for the conclusion to this trilogy. ALSO, you guys I feel like I totally need to read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo now, what with all the comparisons and such.

  1. I’ve just recently gotten the first book but I haven’t read it yet. I’m hearing mixed reviews! But I liked that you liked this second one better – that’s so promising to me!

  2. Just posted my review of Don’t Turn Around. I already have this one. I can’t wait to see what happens. Great review!

  3. Okay, so I was sort of on the fence, but I’m pretty sure that I will listen to book two on audio as well, because I don’t really mind a mindless, action-packed audio, though it would probably bother me in print.
