15 Day Book Blogger Challenge | Day 5

Wow, you guys, with this post we are one third of the way through the challenge! I am still clicking through everyone’s posts from prompt 1, but I am finding all of your answers to be fascinating and interesting. Also? There are so many new to me blogs that I am excited to check out. Anyways. Today’s prompt is all about the books that made you sob and sob and sob. This post is part of a 15 Day Book Blogger Challenge that I started because I was feeling burnt out and then inspired. Check out the challenge here.

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge | Good Books And Good Wine

Recommend a tear jerker.

Y’all, I am one of those people who cries over engagement ring commercials and TV show weddings, so there are lots and lots of books in my life that have made me cry. Whether it is because of an animal, a particularly romantic scene, or the death of a character, books provoke emotional reactions from me.

My number one all time favorite tear jerker is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak | Good Books And Good Wine

Friends, I have read The Book Thief multiple times. I have owned multiple copies. I remember reading it for the first time in college and after I read it, the book made the rounds among my friends. Then, post college, I purchased it on audiobook and y’all, the second time will hit you just as hard.

Probably the best quote to sum up The Book Thief is FROM The Book Thief:

“It’s a small story really, about, among other things:

* A girl
* Some words
* An accordionist
* Some fanatical Germans
* A Jewish fist fighter
* And quite a lot of thievery”

Here’s the elements that made me lose it:

  • This is a book set in Germany during World War II. Clearly, there will be some sads.
  • Hans Hubermann, actually he is pretty much the biggest reason, with his accordian and his gentle patience. I just cannot.
  • Death as narrator, who is haunted by humans.
  • The imagery.
  • Rudy Steiner. ILY FOREVA.
  • Rosa Hubermann and how she’s tough but deep down has true love for Hans and Liesel.
  • The writing just kills me.
  • Max

What about you? What’s a tear jerker that you recommend? I am always down for more books that will give me all the feels!

Comments

  1. I can’t believe I haven’t read this book, yet! Mine may be fairly predictable, but I all-out cried with The Fault in Our Stars. *bawled* 🙂

  2. First, I wanted to say that I love this challenge .. and today is probably one of my favorite days – I love books that make me cry and I am looking forward seeing what everyone got.

    I have never heard about this book before and very likely won’t be a book for me. with me being German, I just don’t especially like reading about WWII 🙂

  3. This was my pick too!! I absolutely LOVED The Book Thief. The audio narration was incredible, nothing like listening to Death tell you a story.

  4. Just when I was getting interested in The Book Thief…. now I will have to prepare myself for when I finally read it 🙁

  5. YES THE BOOK THIEF!! OMG, I cried SO HARD! And pretty much for all the same things you mentioned! This book is so beautiful… I really want to reread it now.

  6. I haven’t read The Book Thief, but I’m putting it in my wish list for Audible right now and getting it next month. Thanks!

  7. I love tear-jerker books! I don’t know why, but a book that can make me really cry is just awesome in many ways, because it means I really like the characters when I can feel their pain.

    I love this challenge, April – so happy you came up with it 🙂

    Have a fantastic Friday!

  8. I still have not read this, and I feel like I’m missing out on something incredible.

  9. You know, I’ve had The Book Thief on my shelf for SO LONG and I still haven’t read it. I’ve heard awesome things about it and have had people tell me to read it and I still haven’t read it. CLEARLY this needs to be changed!

  10. The Book Thief was my choice, too! Oh boy, I cried! And I finished it as the gym too, so that made it worse! Such an amazing read though!

  11. I love this book so much I’ve read it multiple times. Great recommendation!

  12. I haven’t read The Book Thief because I just don’t know if I can handle all the feels! I’m afraid I’ll be in a depressed coma for a month if I read this one, even though I’m sure it’s wonderful. Maybe I should try it as an audiobook, though. I can handle books like this better as an audiobook – there’s a little bit of a disconnect that way, which is good for me when it comes to books like this.

  13. I’ve heard so many good things about this book. I don’t know why I haven’t read it yet. *stares at TBR pile* Oh, that’s why.

  14. Oh I’ve heard that this book is amazing and a total tearjerker. I have got to get this on the pile. From what you revealed, I just know I’ll be a wreck when I read it. Totally awesome pick and thanks for reminding me that I have to read this book.

  15. I’m completely with you. I cry buckets of tears every time I read this. I always think this will be the time that I’ve gotten braver and tougher, but that time has not yet arrived. It is too sad.

  16. This one made my list, too. It’s definitely a doozy. And I freaking LOVE the cover you posted here!

  17. April I didn’t include The Book Thief on my tear jerker list but I absolutely love this book and is one of my all time faves, I definitely think it’s time for a re-read and I do wonder if I will get teary this time.

  18. This book sounds really good. I think I have had it on my TBR for a while. Great pick!

  19. I totally love this challenge. If I hadn’t just gotten back from vacation, and wasn’t leaving again this next week I would totally take part, but I hate committing to doing something something like this, and not be able to do the entire challenge. It’s been fun reading all your posts for it.

    I TOALLY NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! Everyone I know who’s read has raved and raved about this book, and for some reason I haven’t picked it up.

  20. The Book Thief was a close 2nd to the one I ended up going with.
    And actually, my manager just started reading this (I gave her one of my World Book Night copies last year), and she came in and asked if it was going to be a sad story. I don’t think there are words for the look I gave her, or the amount of pity I felt for what she was about to undergo… 😉

  21. I’ve heard so many good things about this book, but I tend to avoid stories that take place during WW2 (Guess I’m burnt out on them.) I’ll probably at least put it on my “Want to Read” shelf on Goodreads.

  22. I need to reread The Book Thief! I remember reading it and liking it a lot (also crying a little) but that was such a long time ago. Nice pick.

  23. I fell for this one too!

  24. Oh, The Book Thief! I finally read it early this year, and I loved it. I absolutely LOVED it. I thought it was wonderfully written, immensely moving and so very creative. It was so beautiful! And just seeing your thoughts and thinking about it makes me want to read it again.

  25. I love The Book Thief and almost chose it for this one but chose your “throw it across the room” book for mine instead (ps I was just as frustrated with the ending, ugh!) Loving the challenge!

  26. I really want to read the Book Thief someday. I have heard so many great things about it.

  27. I always heard good things about this book… too bad I never found it in the bookstores her *sadface.

    The movie’s coming out though so I sure after *that*, all the bookshops will have a copy (-__-)

  28. Dude, so I’ve read The Book Thief twice, and I’m pretty sure I never cried. Big jerk right here.
