15 Day Book Blogger Challenge | Day 4

Today’s prompt is all about the rage AND THE FEELS. I am actually pretty excited for this post and you know, it’s okay to not like books, because there are other people out there who WILL like the book that you did not enjoy, so with this prompt I just want us to bond over the fact that we actually feel things deeply while reading, and even if you have never actually thrown a book, maybe there’s been a few that you have metaphorically wanted to throw.

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge | Good Books And Good Wine

Y’all, I have only really thrown one book in my life out of anger. There have been books that I’ve wanted to chuck, but circumstances aka reading them on an expensive device have prevented that.

The one book I threw?

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult, Book Cover

I remember I got so invested and into this book, I was caring about the characters. I was ready for the girl, whose name I do not even remember, to make her choice because she had to decide about donating some marrow, I think, to her sister who was dying of some disease. BUT, she did not want to be forced, so she gets in a lawsuit and her mom basically sues her kid. I KNOW. Anyways, I was so wrapped up in this book, I was crying all of the tears. I was talking to Tony about it, right.

So, then, I get to the last chapter right and I am reading it in bed, and holy hell did that ending piss me off. I had never been so angry at an ending. I felt it was a cheap cop-out. I won’t spoil it, but suffice to say it made me so mad, you guys. Like when I feel things, I do not want to be let down by an awful ending that doesn’t really solve a G.D. thing. Ugh. SO THEN, Tony is next to me reading his book, right, because we are basically olds, I finish the book, and with tears streaming down my face I threw it across the room and it kind of landed on the stairs. I was SOOOO made. Of course, Tony gave me one of his WHAT THE HELL HAVE I GOTTEN INTO WITH THIS WOMAN looks. And that was the end of that. I haven’t really read a Jodi Picoult book since My Sisters Keeper and do not plan to, despite how much my sister tries and tries to get me to read her.

So, y’all, do you have books that have made you rage?

Comments

  1. As I spoke about in my post, I’ve never actually thrown one, but if I were to make an exception it would be Darren Shan’s Zom-B. I HATED that book, which never happens for me. I’ll dislike a book, even find it to be a terrible one, but rarely am I left with a feeling of rage like I experienced reading that drivel. Ugh. Never reading another Shan book again.

  2. I’m come close to throwing books before but more because I can be a bit dramatic and always want to evoke Scarlett O’Hara. My Sister’s Keeper just made me cry, rather than angry but I can see why you were mad.

  3. I’m not sure I’ve thrown a book before…I’ve come close with some. Most recently Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols…but it’s on my Kindle and there is no way I’m throwing that, lol.

  4. I’ve only watched the movie and not read the book for My Sister’s Keeper. I don’t think that I was enraged by the ending, but I did get pretty upset by the reason for her doing everything. I’m not sure how faithful the adaptation is, so I don’t know if I’d be the same way after reading. I’ve never had a desire to read Jodi Picoult’s books.

  5. I totally get where you’re coming from, but I actually loved the ending of My Sister’s Keeper. I see what you’re saying with the cop-out thing, but while I was reading, I just saw it as a way for the ending not to be preachy – if one side of the argument had won, that would have seemed kind of preachy about what the right thing to do would be. This way, it lets the reader make up their own mind about what’s right and what’s wrong, which, to me, works well with the story that’s so well-balanced with all the different narrators and all of that. I can totally see how it’s a cop-out, but I liked how it lets the reader make their own decision.

Anyways, have you seen the movie? They change the ending, and I think you might like that ending better…

  6. I completely forget how this story ends and whether it drove me insane or not. I’d only read this book because a friend told me it was a must and it just wasn’t a story I was interested in reading at that time. But I may have to pick it up again and peek at the ending to remind myself what happened because you’ve made me so curious to know why you were ready to toss it.

And so sorry that happened. It sounds like it was a super emotional story right up to that ending!

  7. I haven’t physically thrown a book, but I have wanted too.

I was the same with My Sisters Keeper – I was emotionally involved too. Though I agree that the ending was a cop out, I preferred it over the movie’s ending. I watched the movie once, and haven’t since because I was so mad over the movie’s ending. It was completely different.
I have read another of Jodi Picoults books but it was very similar to My Sisters Keeper plot wise so I haven’t read any more by her. Though I own most of them.

  8. I don’t remember if I actually threw this one or not but I felt massively manipulated at the end. I attempted one more of her books and they are all like that. So annoying and never again.

  9. I’ve seen the movie but I didn’t read the book so I can’t compare the two. I do remember that the movie was heartbreaking though. Sorry!

  10. My Sister’s Keeper made me cry as well, but I loved it when I read it. It’s been several years now, but I don’t know how I’d react now.

I did get incredibly angry when I read Atonement, and just before the end, I was so pissed that I threw it against the couch. I loved that book, and it was so freaking sad, but I was so pissed. I mean, it makes sense, and I get it, but I wanted a goddamn happy ending, y’all.

  11. I agree, this ending definitely felt like a cop out. I didn’t get as worked up over it though.

Maybe that’s why they changed the ending in the movie. I haven’t seen the movie but I’ve heard it ends completely different.

  12. I hate, hate, hate that feeling. I actually don’t think I’ve even literally thrown a book, but I know I’ve come so close before. I haven’t read anything my Jodi Piccoult, but I’m thinking she isn’t for me.

  13. I never read this book, but I think I know how it ends b/c someone told me. I don’t blame you for throwing it across the room and being pissed.

  14. My latest was last night, when the book had a group of people forcing medical attention on a girl who had JUST escaped from her abusive boyfriend. “He ignored your wishes, wouldn’t let you leave, violated your personal space, forced you into a traumatizing situation you didn’t want, and all this less than an hour ago? We shall fix this by doing the exact same thing!”

I get wanting to make sure she doesn’t have serious internal injuries and whatnot, but they could at least feel bad about it instead of treating the girl like she’s an abuse-apologist.

  15. I felt the same way about the ending that you did. A complete cop out. One of the few books where I actually preferred the movie ending.

It was the first book of hers that I read and it wasn’t a promising start. So much like you, it may be the only one.

  16. that really sucks when you have put all this time and emotional energy into a book to be really pissed off by the ending. i don’t know if that’s ever really happened to me but i feel your pain.

  17. Is it bad of me to say that I have never liked any of her books? Because I don’t. If anyone wants, they can go ahead and chuck their Jodi Picoult books at me for saying that.

  18. One of Jodi Picoult’s other books, Handle with Care, caused a similar response from me too. UGH. It involved a lawsuit as well, and it just made me SO ANGRY. That was probably three years ago, and I have yet to read another one of her books!

  19. Uh oh… I haven’t read Jodi Picoult, but I do have My Sister’s Keeper…

Anywho, I don’t think I’ve ever actually thrown a book, but I was able to list A NUMBER of books worthy a good ragequit… =D

  20. I haven’t read anything by Jodi Picoult, but I don’t think her writing would appeal to me. I’ve heard a lot of people had similar reactions to yours when finishing this book. Great post and love the challenge!

  21. I loved that movie, never read the book. I didn’t like her reason for doing what she did either, but I was more upset at the fact her sister went through all that in her young life. I’m a sucker for year jerkers and children in pain always make me cry no question! I might go liking for this book and read the ending just to see what you were so pissed about lol.

The book that pissed me of and I SHOULD have tossed at a wall, but I eventually felt sorry for because the wall didn’t do anything to me, was FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. I had never in my life been so pissed off while reading a book, I preferred working to reading! We all know that’s never possible! The characters, the moon existent plot, the abuse, just everything! Even thinking about it gives me a headache, I’ll stop there lol.

  22. I actually liked the ending of My Sister’s Keeper. It definitely is unexpected and terrible – but that is, I think, the point. That Anna can rebel against her parents’ pressure to keep supplying Kate with bone marrow and some organ tissue, etc. but in the end not everything will work out the way we expected it to. I was impressed Picoult had the daring to go there, but I appreciated it. I can also see why others wouldn’t appreciate it, however. (I hear the ending is radically changed in the film version, so perhaps you’d enjoy watching it.)

  23. I actually decided not to read My Sister’s Keeper because I thought it would upset me too much. I guess I made a smart decision. I can understand not reading the author anymore. I’ve done that too with books that end awfully.

  24. BAHAHAHAHAHA. April, I am dying. I have read this book and that’s on point. Just BAHAHAHA.

  25. I haven’t read this one, though I watched the movie. The movie alone made me bawl my freaking eyes out. Since I get more emotionally invested to books? I am terrified to read it >.<

  26. I haven’t read the book, but I understand what you’re saying. I hate it when book endings disappoint, especially when the storyline gives you hopes that everything will be good.

  27. Fifty Shades of Grey made me mad as cow!

  28. I liked the movie a whole lot better than the book, honestly. But SERIOUSLY. I can TOTALLY understand why you threw this one! I was very frustrated with how it ended because it just felt too convenient and, as you said, a cop-out. So I would totally be right there with you if I were in the habit of throwing books in anger!
