15 Day Book Blogger Challenge | Day 10

Ahh, you guys! The end is in sight. I mean, I am having a ton of fun doing this, but am always wracked with such guilt when I haven’t written up the post the night before. Alas, I went to the laundromat yesterday after work for 2 hours and it was not at all fun. Guys imagine a room of heat generating dryers with no air conditioning and 90 degree weather outside and that was my experience. Thankfully, I got to put some of my practical skills from today’s prompt into action as I had almost finished one book and needed to pick another. This post is part of a 15 Day Book Blogger Challenge that I started because I was feeling burnt out and then inspired. Check out the challenge here.

How Do You Choose What Book To Read Next?

First things first: Deadlines! If I have signed up for a tour whether it’s through the publisher or a friend’s tour group, I like to have the book read before my tour date – this is so if I am doing an interview, I can ask something more meaty than the standard where do your ideas come from? I also like to do it so I can throw in my copy of the book and entice people into checking the post out. Apparently I am not above bribery. Same priority is given to Amazon Vine books.

If I am all caught up on tour reading, I then narrow my choices down by genre. I usually do not like to read books of the same genre one after another. Like, I try not to read two fantasy books or two paranormal books in a row as that makes me weary. The exception though, is contemporary. Somehow I am okay with reading those one after another lately. Also, sometimes this totally changes, like when I was on CYBILS all I read was middle grade science fiction and fantasy one after the other for months. That was totally fine, but I needed an adult book by the end because I got a bit burned out.

Once I have my genre of choice picked out, I then usually pick something based on my friends’ reviews, if they are already reviewing certain things. Like, I totally read Wild Awake based on the very early reviews, if I had waited until now, I likely would have ignored it, because to me, when a book gets a lot of early coverage, that means it’s probably good. I know, weird logic! However, there are exceptions to this whole step in the process as well.

You see, if a book totally catches my attention and it’s OMG OMG so exciting it just came in the mail I CANNOT WAIT! Then, I usually wait, lol, a few days until I have some obligation books out of the way to read the book.

If I am really in a rut, I may turn to twitter for suggestions or I may do something out of the ordinary for me, like create a stack and say okay before I can even give other books the eye I MUST read from this stack. It’s worked out pretty well so far.

As for ebooks, basically I read those in strict order of whatever catches my eye, but also length. Shorter ones first.

When it comes to audiobooks — I choose based on a few factors. First is narrator. If I am not in the mood for a certain type of narration, then I will not read the book. Then, I pick based on review copies – so if I have a review copy that is what I will listen to, it takes priority over other books. OR if I get an audiobook on audible and let’s say I randomly got an ARC in the mail for the book, then I’ll listen to that one so that I can get rid of the ARC faster.

And that my friends is my weird WHAT BOOK DO I READ NEXT process in a nutshell.

  1. I love audio books too! I usually grab them from the library and I also have an Audible account. I thought I was the only person that gets the same book twice – ARC and audio book!

  2. No linky code today?

  4. Good post. It is a complicated process! lol. I rarely get to ask for recommendations because there are always soooo many “deadlines” to meet. and sometimes, when I get a brand new book that sounds really really really really good, and I simply cannot wait, then I don’t. Linky is not up yet? here is our (Julie and Rose @Chapter Break) post for today: http://chapterbreak.wordpress.com/2013/07/17/15-day-book-blogger-challengeday-10-how-do-you-choose-what-books-to-read-next/

  5. Deadlines… Deadlines seem to drive many an blogger’s next book selection. I love the fact that I have a bit more freedom with what I read. I sign up and request as little as possible. 🙂 I agree, it is always nice to be able to turn to Twitter for a good book recommendation!

Since I did not see a link up, here is my Day 10 post!

  6. Just like you; Deadlines! When reading a books from my personal library, I have to sometimes turn to my Fiance or dogs to help me pick! Yes, I said Dogs.

  7. I will definitely choose the audiobook before the ARC as well. I try to have as few deadlines as possible, choosing NetGalley books that won’t be released until months later giving me plenty of time to read.

  8. Hey there – I think we are on similar lines with choosing a book, yours was just waay more eloquent then mine.

    Day 10 Challenge Post.

  9. I’m trying to get more into audiobooks! I definitely feel narrators can make or break a book.

    Here’s my Day 10 at Bookmunchies (:

  10. I like reading the short ebooks too, makes my review list seem so much smaller. Those 600 page books give me a heart-attack sometimes, especially when I’m clicking through my kindle and after 10 minutes reading, I’m still at 1%.

  11. A very thorough description which I like 🙂 Mine is much shorter and can be found here: http://elliereadsfiction.blogspot.com/2013/07/15-day-book-blogger-challenge-day-10.html

  12. It’s amazing how many audiobooks are ruined by the narrator. I think my favorite audiobook so far is Anne of Green Gables done by librivrox. A group of people got together and they narrated it like a play.

  13. I’m the same way–address time sensitive reading first, then read for fun. But it does seem like there’s always a buzz worthy book to get my attention in between (like Wild Awake). 🙂

  15. This was hard since I don’t really have a process. Read my convoluted answer here: http://booksteame.com/2013/07/17/15-day-book-blogger-challenge-day-10/

  16. I pretty much agree, it’s about the dedlines!

  17. Deadlines are a big one for me, too. And I also don’t like reading the same genre back-to-back if at all possible. Unless I tackle series books. But I haven’t thought to check out reviews or ratings by friends as the deciding factor. Hmmm, something to consider. Might make choosing my next read a bit easier.

And sorry about the laundromat. Ugh, heat + hot dryers is not fun.

  18. A good narrator is a must for audiobooks. I’ve had to stop listening to them before because of a bad narrator.

  19. I am TERRIBLE when it comes to deadlines and I really have to fix that. I’m so much of a mood reader that it’s hard for me to see a book that I have for review, but not really wanting to read it, to actually pick it up and read it. If I don’t feel like reading something, I’m going to pick up something I feel like reading!

  20. I’m really enjoying seeing everyone’s processes for choosing their next read! It’s always interesting to see how the book blogger mind works…

In my case, this is how it goes:

    1. Tour books get priority. I like being able to read them pretty close to the tour date, but I try to get them done at least three days before so I can figure out what to do for the post (apart from review).

    2. I try to read review books in order, but I can’t read more than 1 review book after another… unless the review book in question is something I’ve been anticipating. I like giving myself a breather in between books for review, and trying to get through stuff I actually own.

    3. Physical books tend to win over e-books for me. I only start e-books when I don’t have any physical books with me, and I want to read! It usually begins on my phone, but I continue on the iPad.

    4. I don’t read books in the same genre one after another either! It sometimes works for contemporary reads. But I generally like jumping from one genre to the next so that I don’t get bored. It’s a mild form of ADD, I think.

    5. In the end though, what determines my next read is my mood. If I start something and end up not feeling it, I put it down and start something else.
