Curse Of The Blue Tattoo | LA Meyer | Audiobook Review

FYI this review contains few minor spoilers for Bloody Jack

Friends, I am having WAY too much fun with this different style of reviewing audiobooks, so I thought I would keep it up for the ones I have waiting to be reviewed. Plus the style makes it easier for me to write the review. So, Curse Of The Blue Tattoo: Being An Account Of The Misadventures Of Jacky Faber, Midshipman And Fine Lady by L.A. Meyer is among my favorite audiobooks. Seriously, if you are new to audiobooks you totally need to try this series, it might just hook you. IN FACT I actually once had a conversation with a person I met while doing presentations who is totally into this audiobook series. (FYI, meeting people who like audiobooks in real life is very rare for me).

Curse Of The Blue Tattoo by LA Meyer | Good Books And Good Wine

Why Did I Spend An Audible Credit On This Book:

I really loved listening to the audio of the first book, Bloody Jack and so when I was going through a dry spell of not so great audios I just knew that I needed something I could depend on, and so here I am with Curse Of The Blue Tattoo in my audiobook library. I regret nothing as this was as fantastic as I had expected.

What’s The Story Here:

After basically saving the day in the last book and when everyone finds out that Jack is really a GIRL, Jacky is basically sent to Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston to learn how to be a fine lady. Straight up, she sees it as a punishment instead of something that will benefit her, but she sucks it up because she wants to be a fine lady for Jaimy. Turns out life on the high seas and on the streets of London has not prepared Jacky for female society. She finds herself getting into scrape after scrape, making an enemy of popular girl Clarissa. Anyways, there’s also a bad guy preacher, Jacky’s tattoo and the fact that she actually does make a good female friend. YAY! But still, during Curse of The Blue Tattoo, I missed Jaimy.

What Did I Think Of Jacky Faber As A Character, Compared To Bloody Jack:

I want to say that Jacky is sort of the same — but the fact of the matter is that she isn’t totally. I mean, she no longer has to pretend to be a boy – although that does happen in this book too. Well, hmmm, no that’s a lie, she still retains her personality. I mean, Jacky is impulsive and boisterous and stubborn. She is also earnest and sweet and not at all stuck up. I love listening to Jacky’s exploits and how she totally does every thing kind of wrong and just goes against convention and etiquette. In a nutshell, Jacky’s just really fun.

How’s The Narration:

Katherine Kellgren’s narration is pitch perfect, and I am not even exaggerating here. I mean, she does all these fun voices and accents and it sounds like multiple people narrating. PLUS! She totally gets into it. She gets loud. She goes quiet. She sings. I love her narration. I know some might say it’s over the top, but honestly, it kept my attention like TV does and that is truly saying something. The audiobook is 14 hours and 13 minutes unabridged. It’s produced by Listen & Live Audio.

Who Should Listen To This:

People who are team pirates (re: pirates vs. ninjas), love strong female characters, like accents and enjoy laughter and fun.

  1. I think that the Bloody Jack series is one of the best audio book series ever. I’ve listened up to book 5 and they get better and better. Jacky is an amazing character – she is brilliant. I love all of the supporting characters.
I also like the subtle history lessons on life in the 1800’s – piracy, privateers, slavery, etc. We try to listen to one of these books on long car trips. The kids tend to actual listen and talk about the books.

  2. Dude, I need to start listening to this series pronto, because you make them all sound so amazing!

I only wish that gif was working for me. INTERNET, GIVE ME GIFS!

  3. This book sounds awesome! And I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I love the layouts of these blog posts! 😀
