Stacking The Shelves (24)

What a whirlwind week! I started the first of my long work days (I work a full day then teach a 3 hour class on Tuesdays and Thursdays), I signed up to take the GRE and I started my grad school applications. It’s so cool to be at the point in my life where I actually feel ready and more than motivated to pursue my dreams — working towards an MLIS with a concentration in youth services. I know that the field is competitive, but I am a fighter, y’all. Anyways! It was also a super week as far as books go — I bought a bunch for my Kindle! AND quite a few showed up in my mail.

For Review:

The Elite by Kiera Cass and The Hero's Guide To Storming The Castle by Christopher Healy | Good Books And Good Wine

The Hero’s Guide To Storming The Castle by Christopher Healy (Requested/Unsolicited Review Copy) – So, I mentioned being jealous about this book on twitter and magically got an email. BUT because I am so fricken overwhelmed with life stuff, I hadn’t responded to it. So the awesome publicist just sent it anyways because she is THE COOLEST EVER (with awesome taste in audiobooks – BTW). Anyways I plan on reading this during the week because it seems perfect for de-stressing.
The Elite by Kiera Cass (Unsolicited) – So, this also came last Saturday after I made STS, in a pretty box. ONLY, lol there was glitter in the box and I didn’t realize and was wearing black because I was going bowling with friends. And hahaha I ended up going out covered in glitter and was like, ah this fucking box. BUT I am appreciative, especially as I finished The Selection this morning and enjoyed it to my surprise.

The Vine Basket and The Menagerie books | Good Books And Good Wine

The Vine Basket by Josane La Valley (Vine) – I love the cover of this book. It’s basically about this girl who wants to go to school and better in life — but she might end up being sent to work in a factory. It just sounds fantastic.
The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland (Vine) – A book about a menagerie that has dragons and unicorns? Um, fuck yes.

Salt by Helen Frost Stacking The Shelves | Good Books And Good Wine

Salt: A Story Of Friendship In A Time Of War by Helen Frost (Requested Review Copy) – I love the cover. I love historical fiction. And I love free verse. Salt combines all of those elements.
Deep Down by Deborah Coates (Unsolicited) – This book is second in a series, so I am not entirely sure about it. But I do love that cover.
Fragments by Dan Wells (Unsolicited) – Finished copy! Yay!

Harper Teen ARCs | Good Books And Good Wine

Rush by Eve Silver (Unsolicited) – This sounds a bit like Ender’s Game minus author homophobia, so I am freakin pumped up to read it.
You Look Different In Real Life by Jennifer Castle (Unsolicited) – YESSSS! Reality TV is my favorite AND Jennifer Castle was super lovely when I met her thus I can’t wait to crack this one open.
A Trick Of The Light by Lois Metzger (Unsolicited) – I look forward to this one because it’s about a boy with an eating disorder — yes it does happen and I wouldn’t mind reading a contemp on a new-to-me issue.
Defy The Dark edited by Saundra Mitchell (Unsolicited) – So there’s a short story by Courtney Summers in here? HELL YEAH BUDDY. Also? I need to read more short stories.
Elegy by Tara Hudson (Unsolicited) – The third book in a trilogy I haven’t read yet. Alas.
Born Of Illusion by Teri Brown (Unsolicited) – Yo, I love 1920s NY, and I am prepared to love the shit out of this book.
Severed Heads, Broken Hearts by Robyn Schneider (Unsolicited) – I’ve seen mixed reviews for this and am kind of nervous about it, but I’ll go in with an open mind.

New Lands and Love Wins | Good Books And Good Wine

New Lands by Geoff Rodkey (Unsolicited) – So, lucky me I actually ended up purchasing book one of this series The Chronicles Of Egg at that Penguin Sale I always mentioned. I’m not sure when I will get to it, but it is NICE to have the sequel on hand. Also, I love middle grade.
Love Wins: For Teens by Rob Bell (Unsolicited) – I think this is a religious book and while I’ve been told it’s unique, guys, I just have no interest in it.

From Edelweiss:

House Of Secrets by Chris Columbus and Ned Vizzini (Edelweiss) – Heck yes middle grade! Beyond that, I like books by Ned Vizzini and Chris Columbus’s movies, so I am beyond excited to read House Of Secrets.
In The After by Demitria Lunetta (Edelweiss) – Hell yes, another post apocalyptic book and this one looks deliciously thick. I cannot wait to delve in.
Fault Line by Christa Desir (Edelweiss) – Bad ass cover, I hope the book is equally as bad ass on the inside.
How My Summer Went Up In Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski (Edelweiss) – YAY! I am going to read this when I am in the mood for a kick ass contemporary.

Purchased:

For Kindle:

How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez – I bought this one to clear space off my shelves because it was inexpensive. Also, I wasn’t entirely in love with the cover I had.
Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick – I have heard nothing but good things about this YA book pubbed by Harper Teen. Also, it’s on sale for $1.99 I think. So you should snap it up too.
A Secret In Her Kiss by Anna Randol – I love this book cover and when this romance book first made the rounds I was interested, but never committed to purchasing it. However, I couldn’t resist it’s cheap price tag.
Badass by Ben Thompson – I just love history. And this looks like a fun way to look at history.
I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb – Another super huge book taking up space that I was more than happy to buy in cheap kindle form and put into my cull bag.
Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund – Also a book I had on my shelves, but it just was kind of blah and the pages were yellowing.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

  1. Awesome haul this week! I Hope you enjoy all your books! Check out mine sometime!

  2. The Elite! I’m looking forward to reading that one … I thought The Selection was a fun read!

You got a ton of books this week – wow! I hope you enjoy them! 🙂

  3. You know, it makes me a little crazy to be offered or sent books that are 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in a series. I’m pretty much mentally incapable of starting a series in the middle, and I’m not that person who will seek out the other two (or however many) books that came before in a series just to take a chance on the latest one. It’s a serious quandary when one shows up in my mailbox – especially if it looks half-decent!

Mild ranting aside, though, it looks like you had a great haul this week. A Trick of the Light sounds really interesting, having a guy with an eating disorder definitely changes things up a little!

  4. So many beautiful books!! I can’t wait to read Elite, I really enjoyed the Selection! Fragments is one I can’t wait to get my hands on either, I just finished reading Partials and it was awesome! I hope you enjoy all of your wonderful reads.

  8. Awesome book haul! So jealous April! 😛 I also bought a Julia Alvarez book, but I chose In The Time of the Butterflies. I’m loving some of these titles you got that I have never heard of. Enjoy!

  9. Wow, so lucky! I love your haul this week. I got Born of Illusion from Edelweiss, and I’m really looking forward to it. Enjoy your books, and thanks so much for stopping by:)

  10. Lovely lovely books. I was chuckling over “You Look Different In Real Life.” I’ll look forward to your review of it.

  11. Goodness what an amazing pile 🙂 Happy Reading! They all look like great books.

  12. I am dying to read The Elite. I also really enjoyed The Selection–definitely took me by surprise. I also can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Born of Illusion and How My Summer Went up in Flames. I’ll keep my eye out for your reviews. Enjoy your books!

  13. I got How My Summer Went Up in Flames as well! I can’t wait to read that one. I kind of want to read Rush, but I’m not so sure about it yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you thought of it.

  14. Such an awesome haul! I swear, I am tempted every day to throw everything else aside that needs to be read and dive into Born of Illusions.

You want to be a YA librarian?? That is so awesome, April! 😀

  15. The Vine Basket looks beautiful and sounds like a great story, too! And what an awesome haul – enjoy these reads, hun!

  16. Wow, some great books this week. The Elite and The Menagerie look brilliant. Enjoy your reads!

  17. So excited you’re working towards your MLIS! You are going to rock it. I was fortunate, the program I took for my MLIS did not require a GRE so I’ve never taken that test (yet anyway).

  18. Sweet books! Fragments and Rush both look great!

    Hope you enjoy everything 🙂

  19. Wow, what an awesome haul! I hope you enjoy them all, especially The Elite.

  20. I am always really impressed with your hauls, April. You get so many great books! I have been wanting Menagerie since I heard about it. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts. It looks like such a fun MG.

  21. Bahahaha, The Elite box covered you in glitter. You got to look like Ke$ha all day. That’s the best.

I really want to read Healy’s books because of your high praise. Just saying.

Oooh, The Vine Basket sounds awesome, and I had never heard of it. I will be watching for your review.

    The Menagerie too!

OMG, Harper things. Though Harper and I don’t always agree, but I’m super curious about several of these.

  22. Haha, I just finished Fragments about an hour ago! It’s chunky, that one!

Also the adult version of that Rob Bell: Love Wins book is super controversial. I remember being really excited about it when it was ABOUT to be released and then watching all of these livestreams with my friends and stuff when he defended the position he took in his book, and then I spent a lot of time discussing it with people. So, yeah, I can’t really see it as an April book, and honestly I’m surprised they made a YA book from the adult version. But you know how I love mixed reviews and books with religious themes, so that book was TOTALLY right up my alley. Haha.

  23. The Menagerie is the most intriguing book in your STS this week, at least for me. I sincerely hope you enjoy it and can’t wait to read your review!

  24. woot woot THE ELITE! I still need to sit down and read this one. Can you please text-remind me what happened in The Selection?? PLEASE?
