The Lies That Bind by Lisa and Laura Roecker

Typically I would start this review off by saying OMG OMG look away, spoilers for book one, but as I have like the worst memory ever lately I will just straight up say NO WORRIES because I don’t remember all of the spoilers and secrets for The Liar Society. However, if you are terrified of being spoiled, just read this review of The Liar Society by Lisa and Laura Roecker instead. YOU GUYS! I really quite enjoyed The Lies That Bind, I thought it was a fast and fun read and for real, I would love it if Kate Lowry, girl detective was my BFF, she is WONDERFUL.

The Lies That Bind opens with Grace’s memorial, but before that there’s this secret society thing that Kate spies on. And no this isn’t a spoiler, because she’s dead before book one. Anyways, Kate is super upset and decides she wants to take down the secret societies because they are responsible and like, they didn’t get any consequences. At Grace’s memorial, it’s discovered that Grace’s family has donated a ton of money in her name — but with strings attached, like students caught trespassing will be expelled. ANYWAYS, the students hold this event, right, because it’s a tradition which goes against those rules and at the event, this one girl who Kate dislikes gets kidnapped. Kate is then forced to work with another girl, Taylor, who she also dislikes, to find Bethany. Of course, we get to discover WAY more about the secret societies.

Kate is freakin’ awesome. Like, she’s all Nancy Drew with blue hair — she ditched the pink, FYI in case you can’t tell from the book cover. I love that she remains determined. FURTHER. She totally does not let her man dictate what she does, which does come up in The Lies That Bind, and I love that. Like, okay, yes her stubbornness gets her into trouble, but she has a great big heart and I just love that she does what she truly believes is right regardless of Liam (her boyfriend) and his opinion. To me, Kate’s bravery and loyalty to her ’cause’ make me totally admire her and want to be her friend.

YOU GUYS. The Lies That Bind kind of made me sad about going to public school. You see, when you go to public school there aren’t exactly any secret socities, nor is there really a feeling of prestige. At least not at my public school, if only you could see the chuckleheads I went to school with. ANYWAYS. Pemberly Brown is awesome. There are tunnels and different buildings and SECRET PASSAGES. Like, damn, I wish my alma mater had cool things like that. Plus, there’s this whole boy versus girl secret society rivalry and it’s totally interesting and gets kind of dangerous pretty quickly.

I really think Lisa and Laura Roecker make a fantastic writing team. Their characterization and pacing are dead on. Like, you guys I fricken loved the side characters. I totally would ship Seth and Kate, even though Seth is a redheaded nerd, like the ugly Weasley brother before he got hot. (Didn’t they all get hot? Is that just me?) AND! Bradley Farrow, hello nice to see more of you, good sir. AND AND! Ben, the Jersey Shore wannabe, who brought comic relief. Like, I loved their comedic timing — how things would get tense, but then something would lighten the mood, keeping the book in fun mode. Plus, I was glued so like, it went by really fast and I’m all YAY THIS BOOK IS AWESOME MORE PEOPLE NEED TO READ IT, because I am like that with plenty of fast paced books.

Legit, you should check both The Liar Society and The Lies That Bind by Lisa and Laura Roecker out. They are fun mystery reads that don’t take themselves too seriously. The characters are fun. There are actual laugh out loud moments. And for real, a secret passage. SECRET PASSAGE, dude nerd dreams right in this book. AND oh my goodness the ending totally made me want book 3, it’s a cliffhanger and normally I hate those, but this one totally whetted my appetite.

Comments

  1. I didn’t read your review – not that I don’t think it rocks! – because I haven’t read the first book in this series. I just wanted to comment that I want the hat from the cover. I would wear it all the time. 🙂

  2. I wasn’t interested in this series AT ALL, but your review convinced me to add it to GR. Good work, ma’am.

  3. The love I have developed for this series knows no bounds. And, April dear, there are under-gound tunnels at McGill. Just sayin’.

But I am so happy I took a chance on these books at Christmas because they were the best things to read to start off my year and I ADORED them. So much fun and excitement. Which made me even happier to see this review.

I also feel all sad I did not go to private school. I wanted a uniform with plaid skirt SO BAD.

    • HAHAHHA but it is in Canada and Canada is cold, but I do love Montreal, although I am terrified of Canadian drivers, I just remember they went really fast the last time I went.

Dude plaid skirts are the best and super cute. I think I own 2 but one is a bit too short on me.

  4. I can’t remember everything that happened in book 1 either. Now that I’ve read your review I’m thinking I need to re-remeber and then pick up book 2. Great review!
