Ten 2013 Debuts On My TBR Pile

Y’all, looks like we have a whole new incoming class of debut authors coming in and I could not be more excited. I mean, sure I love reading books by tried and true authors but there’s something incredibly exciting about new voices coming on the scene. I daresay, a few of you will agree with me. (I have been listening to Pride & Prejudice, thus the daresay). Here’s ten debuts that I am looking forward to that I haven’t featured in previous Top Ten Tuesdays.

Ten Debuts I’m SUPER Excited About:

1. The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd

The Madman's Daughter Megan Shepherd Book Cover

Why?: I’ve mentioned The Madman’s Daughter in a few other pots, however I’m looking forward to it because it retells a story that we don’t often hear – The Island Of Dr. Moreau. Plus, it’s historical fiction and sounds quite compelling.

2. How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski

How My Summer Went Up In Flames Jennifer Salvato Doktorski Book Cover

Why?: The beginning of the summary reminded me of the song ‘Before He Cheats’ by Carrie Underwood and there’s nothing I love more than a scorned woman getting revenge. AND OMG YOU GUYS IT TURNS INTO A ROAD TRIP BOOK and I hope to goodness it’ll be a little tiny bit like Amy And Roger’s Epic Detour which omg way too much love.

3. Reboot by Amy Tintera

Reboot Amy Tintera Book Cover

Why?: I read the summary and said out loud ‘fuck yes’ because I am crass like that. ANYWAYS! This girl dies and she is rebooted and she becomes the perfect soldier AND THERE IS A BOY WHO CAUSES TROUBLE and of course, I am getting all shouty. Whatever I am pumped up about Reboot.

4. The Flame In The Mist by Kit Grindstaff

The Flame In The Mist Kit Grindstaff

Why?: Apparently this is billed as ‘for fans of The Golden Compass‘ so, that’s me. There are ghosts and a prophecy and a candle and a fiery red-headed main character. Of freakin course this is on my MUST READ list.

5. In The Shadow Of Blackbirds by Cat Winters

In the Shadow of Blackbirds Cat Winters Book Cover

Why?: SPANISH INFLUENZA! YOU GUYS! I love diseases! I LOVE READING ABOUT THEM. Like, yeah that’s bizarre but you know I have this quirk. Oh goodness I cannot freakin’ wait. Plus that cover is a number one stunner.

6. Poison by Bridget Zinn

Poison Bridget Zinn Book Cover

Why?: Besides really wanting the girl’s boots on the cover, Poison is about *Potter Puppet Pals Voice* a potions master. Anyways, the girl shoots a poison dart and misses and now everyone is after her. HECK YES. Cannot wait.

7. Fault Line by C. Desir

Fault Line C Desir Book Cover

Why?: Honestly, I love that cover. It’s so bold and striking and makes me want to smoke hahahaha. Basically these two kids are about to date, there’s a party that main character Ben doesn’t go to but his girl Ani does. She comes out totally changed. And this book is all about that. Sounds serious and awesome.

8. Strands Of Bronze And Gold by Jane Nickerson

Strands Of Bronze And Gold Jane Nickerson Book Cover

Why?: Retelling of Bluebeard and oh my, that gorgeous cover. Plus I’m a huge glutton for historical fiction forever.

9. Thin Space by Jody Casella

Thin Space Jody Casella Book Cover

Why?: Thin Space looks utterly tragic and sad and the sort of book that makes you feel all of the things.

10. Canary by Rachele Alpine

Canary Rachele Alpine Book Cover

Why?: I’m the biggest cover whore ever and you guys, there is a bird on this cover and I freakin love bird covers, plus I love how it looks like a paper bag. Also, this book is contemporary and I really don’t read enough of them. The summary sounds fabulous.

  1. How My Summer Went Up In Flames is on my list as well! It looks like it’ll be a fun read.. plus ROAD TRIP? I think that’s like half the aspect of some of my favorites.

    great list! (:

    My Top Ten

  2. I’m so glad other people find the Spanish influenza interesting! I’ve been trying to refrain from talking about it at work so at not to freak people out but I really want to discuss it in the light of the current flu season.

    • Ha ha ha, yeah I think my coworkers would be like whattttt is this girl yammering on about. Then again they are used to me being weird, but it really is fascinating, especially because they said this flu season is supposed to be super bad.

  3. Thanks for the LOOKS. DACs kind of fell off my radar this year. Can’t wait to hear what everyone is thinking…& send me into a covet-ess frenzy.

  4. I don’t usually pay attention to debuts – these looks so interesting. I’m especially loving the cover for Fault Line.

  5. OOO! Fault Line and Canary must go on my list IMMEDIATELY!!!

  6. Great list! I also am looking forward to Strands of Bronze and Gold as well as Poison and How My Summer Went up in Flames. In the Shadow of Blackbirds is new to me. I’ll have to add it to my TBR list. I love anything with diseases too—Laurie Halse Anderson’s Fever 1793 is one of my favorite reads.

  7. The Madman’s Daughter was good. (Look, I sometimes approve of things!)

How My Summer Went Up in Flames: just got this one yesterday. *flails* AND it’s on my list as well, though my list isn’t up yet.

Fault Line should have been on my list. Fail!

Strands of Bronze and Gold: I’ve been hearing some less than good things, but I hope that they are wrong because fairy tale retelling and cover and…it should just be good!

I’ve never heard of Thin Space. *goes to investigate*

    • Hehehe you crack me up in the best possible way! I’m really looking forward to The Madman’s Daughter. Also when you disapprove of things, I usually end up feeling more kind towards them because my expectations get lowered, so that’s actually a good thing.

OMG. I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOU! Did you get it from Edelweiss?

Big fail for not including Fault Line, that cover is legit.

I hope people are wrong about Strands Of Bronze And Gold as well, but I’ll keep my mind open.

Thin Space has an interesting summary, should be dramatic.

  8. So much fantasticness (is that a word??) this year! SO MUCH!

I’ve heard absolutely fantastic things about The Madman’s Daughter and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!!

Stop by and see my Top Ten Tuesday!

  9. Canary and Strands of Bronze and Gold for the WIN. YES, April. You do need more contemporary in your life 😀

  10. Fault Line was not on my radar before but it is now! Thanks!

  11. Obvi we have a bunch in common. ALSO I think you are going to really like Madman’s Daughter, April! It was real good! Haven’t heard of Canary but OMG COVER LOOOOVE.

  12. I LOVED How My Summer Went Up in Flames; Poison looks so good! 🙂 My TTT list: http://aliceinreaderland.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/debuts/

  13. So many awesome books! I haven’t heard of In the Shadow of Blackbirds, but that cover is beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

  14. WOW I am loving Fault Line’s cover. And a book about Spanish Influenza? Yes please, with that scary ass cover that makes me need this book in my life.

  15. Oohhh, Fault Line sounds good! I’ve seen it on a few lists, but had no clue what it was about. That’s definitely going on my list.

  16. Only one of these was on my list, but that’s in part because I focused on the first three months of the year. Love your list, though the cover with the red-eyed rats coming out of the cloak kind of freaks me out. It’s not that I don’t like rats, but cozying up to my neck? No no no.

  17. I’m excited about so many of these! Fault Line is new to me, but it sounds like my kind of book!

  18. So excited to see CANARY on your list! I love the cover too! Can’t wait until you (and everyone) can read it!

  19. I’m particularly excited to start reading The Madman’s Daughter soon! The story sounds fantastic, and I’ve been hearing great things about this particular book 🙂

  20. Wow, that cover of Fault Line is so eye-catchingly good! I am also looking forward to The Flame in the Mist, The Madman’s Daughter, In the Shadows of Blackbirds and Reboot. Awesome list =D

    Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday!

Sana @ artsy musings of a bibliophile

  21. 1. I can’t wait for The Madman’s Daughter too! So with you on the historical fiction gluttony. Plus, I’m in love with the cover.
    2. Love scorned woman getting revenge songs soooo now you’ve made me want to read this book! In one sentence. You have magical powers. I’m convinced.
    3. SO want to read Reboot now! I hadn’t read a description because the book looked dark and sad and I like my books happier and less barcode-y but I’m down for a little perfect solider and boy causing trouble action.
    4. WTH? April, she has rats on her shoulder. I just can’t.
    5. Am I allowed to be obsessed with your disease-loving reading quirk? Because that’s hilarious!
    7. So mysterious! What happens at this party?! Tell me more.
    8. I WANT THIS NOWWWWWWW. (Aside: Whenever I say this phrase out loud, I try to use the voice of the spoiled rich girl in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie – Veruca Salt. So imagine it being said like that.)
    10. But why is the bird crying? And is it sitting on a basketball? Either way, I’m down to read this. Love covers like this that aren’t so cheeseball.

  22. So glad I decided to check this post out! I hadn’t heard of FAULT LINE, THIN SPACE, or CANARY before, but they all sound worthy of my time. Thanks for sharing, April!

  23. Love, love, love THIN SPACE, and I’m dying to read MADMAN’S DAUGHTER. And IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS—what a cover! Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing this great list–nice to see some new names and fresh titles. I can’t wait to check them out!
